Mapping a FTP site as a Local drive

How can I map a FTP site as a Local drive. For example if I have a site called ftp.abc.com I want to map this as X drive and I want to use it as a local drive.

    First, you must create a file
    called LMHOSTS in your Windows directory. Give it the following structure:

    ip-address alias # the octothorpe starts a comment

    e.g.: 198.105.232.1 MSFTP # Microsoft's FTP site

    Next, right-click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive... Select a drive letter, and in the Path: text box, type the alias and a directory:

    \\msftp\data

    Select OK, and you're on. Note that this works best with Windows 95 and Windows NT FTP sites. It works more or less with other FTP servers. It works just as
    well over PPP as over a direct connection.

    for example I want to map "ftp.microsoft.com " and I don't know its IP address. What would be the LMHOSTS entry?

    To get the IP address of any site do the following:
    1. Go to the DOS prompt
    2. Type in "Ping ftp.myaddress.com"

    Example:
    ping ftp.microsoft.com

    Results:
    Pinging ftp.microsoft.com [207.46.133.140]

    If you want to put ftp.microsoft.com for e.g. in the LMHOSTS file
    then you must put the following entry in a file called HOSTS
    in the same directory as the LMHOSTS file.

    x.x.x.x ftp.micro$oft.com

    you get the x.x.x.x value from Axters value above.

    If you want to be more general so that things don't break
    if microsoft for e.g. change IP addresses then you need
    to set up DNS on your machine (it probably is already if
    you're connected to the internet). When this is done you don't
    need to add anything to the HOSTS file.

    ------------------------------------------------
    To do this programmatically, emm you need to write the
    file programmatically. Just open it, add the appropriate line
    and close it. Really easy in any programming/batch language.

    I tried your method. But it is giving an error saying cannot establish a connection as soon as I click the OK button. It is not even trying to connect. Can anyone give me the complete instructions?
