sql syntax (outer join)

I've got a table which contains short look-up lists for a database. There are about 80 of these lists, so I was relucatant to create a new table for each, so the way I have structured this look-up table is...

LookUpType - Pri Key
LookUpKey - Pri Key
LookUpValue

So, for example if I'm storing a person's sex, the table will consist of..

lkt lkk lkv
sex m Male
sex f Female
sex u Unknown

All well and good, it works well, until you try to run an SQL query on this... I just can't work out the syntax.

If the person's sex has not been entered in the main table, I still want to return the main person record. (hence the use of Left Join)

so..

select * from [person] left join [LookUps] on [person].sex=[lookups].[LookUpKey] and [lookups].[LookUpType]='sex'

I would have thought this would work, I've got as far as getting past the syntax check (by adding brackets around the 'ON' statement), but it never returns rows for people where their sex doesn't match one of the look-up items.

PS. I'm using a jet 3.51 database
