Question

User Control BackStyle issue

Asked by: rspahitz

I recently created a nice animation control for myself, but when I move the control, the "vbButtonFace" background obviously interfered with other objects as I moved this control around my form, leaving the usual gray rectangle.

When I set the control's BackStyle from Opaque to Transparent, I got the result I wanted at Run-time but it made it so I could not select the object at Design-time by clicking on it--only by "drag-selecting" it.

Is there a way I can make the control's backstyle Opaque at design time and Transparent at run-time...exclusively inside the user control. i.e. no code should be written in the application which used this control, only in the user control itself.

Paste this code in the user control

Private Sub UserControl_Initialize()
UserControl.BackStyle = vbTransparent
End Sub

Good Luck....

Use the Ambient property to determine this:

Private Sub UserControl_Show()
    If (UserControl.Ambient.UserMode) Then
        Debug.Print "Run Time"
        UserControl.BackStyle = 0
    Else
        Debug.Print "Design Time"
        UserControl.BackStyle = 1
    End If
End Sub

I tried to Award points to Erick37 but was told that I didn't have enough...hmm then what was the purpose of the escrow account?  My balance is 20, but that shouldn't impact the awarding of points.

Now when I try to accept the answer, I get a server error indicating that this question was not found.

Anyone know how this system works?  This is my first experience with awarding points.

Erick37 , That was what I already said. UserControl_Initialize() Will only fire when it has to be initialised i.e. at run time...

by: rspahitzPosted on 2001-01-12 at 11:22:57ID: 107619

Maybe, but I tried it and it didn't do anything for me, probably because there is (according to the microsoft documentation) design-time, control run-time, and user run-time.

In order for the control to be useable in another project, it has to be "running", so it initializes when you add it to another project at design time.  Read the doc; it's pretty interesting in how it describes the lifetime of a control.

Ajay:

The Initialize event fires both in the VB IDE (on a form during design time), and when it is  run in a compiled program (runtime).

In order to distinguish between the two environments, we need to examine the Ambient.UserMode property.

Hi rspahitz

Any luck getting EE to allow you to accept the answer?

by: rspahitzPosted on 2001-01-18 at 11:02:50ID: 120384

EE sent me a messages to try again to accept the comment, but it still hasn't worked.  If you bear with me for another week and a half, I will have accumulated enough to close this.

I'm kind of new to this (obviously), and I thought that by answering other people's questions I would get enough to use toward this question, but I guess Expert points are only good for prestige and T-shirts!?

Either way, I'm having fun sharing my knowledge (or sometimes stupidity when I answer questions!)

by: Erick37Posted on 2001-01-18 at 11:12:05ID: 120403

You shouldn't have to pay twice for one question.  There is still a bug in the system that needs to be corrected.  In the mean time, don't increase the points because you have already deposited them.

by: rspahitzPosted on 2001-01-18 at 11:22:39ID: 120432

I'll find out how it works when I get there, but I have a feeling there is a logic flaw in their programming that is checking the wrong field when crediting points.  It should be checking the escrow value for the original amount, plus the Question Points for any added amounts.  I think it's just checking Question Points for the sum.

Since this question is 135, and my balance is (currently) 40, it thinks I don't have enough even though the amount is in escrow.  I'm guessing that when my balance gets to 135, the logic will see that I have enough points, then deduct from the escrow account, leaving me (still) with 135.

Either way, it's a bug that should be fixed so newbies don't get frustrated.  I'll try to continue pursuing this.
