Need fast sorting routine

Is there a fast way to read the contents (file names) of a directory into a sorted data structure? I am using the API as far as retrieving the file names, but it is the actual sorting which impacts performance. I have tried all sorts of ways and all of them result in long processing times. Just to get a comparison test speed, I have read the contents of a directory containing 5000 files into an unsorted array in almost no time. But as soom as I try and add sorting - either during or after reading all the files, my performance goes down the toilet? Any ideas? Or am I going to be stuck with having to rely on a listview for quick sorting?

Just to let you know a few things I have tried: I have tried reading all of the files directly into an array, then sorting that array into another array. I have tried reading into a memory resident disconnected recordset, which yielded the best, but still unsatisfactory performance. I even tried writing a VB link list, which came close to the recordset in performance, but not quite.

So, I am stumped...
