I would like some ideas about application security. we have a group of programs that are installed on client machines. at this point the person sitting there can do anything in any exe we write. we now want to implement security. it would start at exe level, the user tries to open a program and the program says sorry you can't or lets them in. then we want security in the program. Menus, icons, modes(most programs have a couple of different modes that can be selected), and eventually field level on the entry screens. we are going to store usernames and passwords in our sql server db and write a program that allows some admin to modify the table with the usernames and their security. A database level security is not valid. We don't want to put field level constraints on users in the actual db. I want to get some experts opinions that have done this before. I have a lot of ideas, but someone who has already done this would have the ins and outs worked out already.
