Hi
Take a look on my sample at http://www.freevbcode.com/ShowCode.Asp?ID=632
>>: This nice demo application demonstrates 3 ways to detect whether or not a current Internet connection is active -- by checking the registry, by using functions within the wininet.dll, and by pinging yahoo.com. Remarks explaning the advantages and disadvantages of each method are included within the application.<<
Choose the way you like.

Cheers

ping

by: decae2001Posted on 2001-11-25 at 10:28:45ID: 6651288

Ping has its own disadvantages. One of them is the url or
ip that you ping can be down, and it doesn't mean the
internet connection is down.

So, maybe I should have a array of 5 reliable ip or url.
If the ping failed from these 5, that I can conclude that
my inernet connection is 100 % down. What do you experts think ?

by: aikimarkPosted on 2001-11-25 at 12:21:19ID: 6651385

ping the ip address, not a URL.  That way you're not at the mercy of your DNS.  For instance,
ping 207.46.230.219

rather than
ping www.microsoft.com

==============================================
Your five-site-ping idea has merit.  You might be thrown off if there is a denial-of-service attack on your five sites.

by: decae2001Posted on 2001-11-25 at 13:58:30ID: 6651452

but it is still a good idea, right ? it is better than
only one ip

Advice:
Get the code working with one site and put it into beta testing status.  Get performance figures while it is checking just one site.  Drop the connection/slow/confuse the connection and evaluate the actions/accuracy/performance of your code.

Then add additional sites (you might start with just one additional site) and retest your code.

Only testing will determine how many (if any) additional sites will result in reliable connection status detection without degrading performance.
