I need to save a jpeg picture without having to pay for an activex control.. I am using VB5.

This object is the best I've come across, it converts bmp to gif and jpg and vice-versa.
you will have to first save your picture as bmp using the savepicture method and then simply convert it to jpg, you can event over write the same file (save the bmp as picturename.jpg and then run PicFormat321.SaveBmpTojpg picturename.jpg, picturename.jpg)
I find this much simpler then using the intel dll.

Depending on how much time you want to put into it you could look at http://www.wotsit.org where you can get technical information on reading and writing most file types.

Heh, just use the intel JPEG library... it comes with a good VB example.
