Browse All TopicsCould someone please provide code that I could use as the basis for a TAPI "Answering Machine"? I would like to have an application that would answer the phone after X number of rings, then play and sound over the line to allow the caller to know that it has answered, after which it will listen for and recognize either voice commands or the tone of the key(s) being pressed by the caller and be able act upon this input.
I hope this doesn't sound as outrageous as I think it might but i've heard of something similiar to this idea being built under the Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can do this without spending money, but...
1. Why do you want to reinvent the wheel?
2. Why not arrive at a solution with the least amount of elapsed time?
3. Experience = Pain (so you will have to pay in some comodity)
Why take just my word on this matter? Ask people who've done this and ask some Exceletel customers, especially those who tried to do it themselves.
soulfyre,
If you are doing this as a learning experience, by all means do the research and have fun. I commend your ambition!
If you are doing this for a professional project (i.e. you are getting paid), by all means by the components. It may take a presentation, but very few companies will actually choose to pay you for weeks/months when they can spend a couple grand and have the product immediately. It is really your responsibility as an ethical professional to tell your employer that you can either create one from scratch or they can purchase a component that is already field tested. The field tested one should also have far fewer bugs.
You might not need a "couple of grand" if you only need features in the Express or Standard versions of their software:
ExceleTel TeleTools 3.6 Express $249
ExceleTel TeleTools 3.6 Standard $499
ExceleTel TeleTools 3.6 Professional $999
ExceleTel TeleTools 3.6 Enterprise $1,999
==========================
I do recommend shopping around for competing products. I just happen to know the Exceletel guys because they are local and have given presentations at local user groups.
I've heard their stories about what goes on inside their product to make TAPI easy to use for developers. If you want to "feel their pain" then go right ahead and write it.
Good comments from Joebob about professional conduct and responsibility.
