Hi.. you're rigth. I was cheking the cell function help and found your "D4" explanation. As I can see, you can get the "real" format, not this kind of notation.
Cheking the cells(1,1).NumberFormat you'll get "mm/dd/yy".
If you need the "D4" notation, you have to use a "select" or something similar to translate "real formats" to "D4" notation.

The solution I ended up using is to set a formula with the "CELL" function in a neutral cell and read its value.
The thing is that after using the Formula function I get a message asking me if I want to save the changes made the the excel file , how can I suppress this message , I do not want to save any changes to the file.

Hi... the application.worksheetfunct ion provides access to many Excel function, but all. "Cell" is not available here, but you can get all its functionality directly from VB or VBA.
What exactly do you need from the CELL function?
