Question

Textbox with scroll bar problem

Asked by: samsungfanatic

Hi,

i created a winsock application that allows two-way chat communication.

The text being recieved on both ends is logged into a textbox (txtIn), i set the text box properties to multiline and also a vertical scroll bar. when the amount of data fills the textbox (going down) the verticle scroll bar fails to go down with the new data, so the user has to scroll manually down and this process keeps happening when new data arrives. Is there any way of making the verticle scroll bar on the text box keep up with the data in the text box?

thanks for any help.

When you get new data, execute this code:

   TextBox.SelStart = Len(TextBox.Text)
   Call SendMessage(TextBox.hWnd, EM_SCROLLCARET, byval &h0&, byval &h0&)

Here, EM_SCROLLCARET = &hB7&.  The declaration for SendMessage should be in the API viewer.

Cheers.

Hi, thanks for the replies, i am a beginner to vb and still learning a lot of things which some would consider very easy.

JMoon5FTM: Do i place EM_SCROLLCARET = &hB7& in the general declarations section of the form?

Below is how i am getting the arrived data:

Private Sub wsChat_DataArrival(ByVal bytesTotal As Long)
Dim incoming As String

wsChat.GetData incoming

txtIn.Text = txtIn.Text & incoming & vbCrLf
End Sub

i am very fuzzy on how i should execute the code can you please explain in a little more detail how i can get around this? thanks

I'd use SendMessage with WM_VSCROLL as message:

SendMessage txtLog.hWnd, WM_VSCROLL, SB_BOTTOM, byval 0&

This should work ok as I use it in a regular basis with no problems (VB5 though).

i dont understand where to use this code????

by: evakvPosted on 2003-04-11 at 17:17:35ID: 8316794

as webJose said, use SendMessage with WM_VSCROLL
your code will look something like this, everytime after u append text to the textbox, u send a message to tell the vscroll to scroll to the botton of the text

'general declaration
Private Const WM_VSCROLL = &H115
Private Const SB_BOTTOM = 7
Private Declare Function SendMessage Lib "user32" Alias "SendMessageA" _ (ByVal hWnd As Long, ByVal wMsg As Long, _
ByVal wParam As Long, lParam As Any) As Long

'sub function
Private Sub wsChat_DataArrival(ByVal bytesTotal As Long)
Dim incoming As String
wsChat.GetData incoming
txtIn.Text = txtIn.Text & incoming & vbCrLf
SendMessage txtIn.hWnd, WM_VSCROLL, SB_BOTTOM, byval 0&
End Sub

Hi evakv, thanks but it still fails to scroll down,  webJose  stated that he is using vb5, im using vb6 if this has any effect?

thanks in advance for any help.

by: webJosePosted on 2003-04-12 at 13:11:03ID: 8319613

It is incredibly strange that it doesn't work.  The processing of WM_VSCROLL is a must for a scrollable window.  I just can't imagine why it does not work.  Have you tried the specialized message EM_SCROLLCARET?

Other than what you have seen above, I just can't think of anything else.

by: samsungfanaticPosted on 2003-04-12 at 17:15:22ID: 8320465

Hi webjose, i have tried the EM_SCROLLCARET message aswel but still no luck, i have no clue in why it fails to work.

by: evakvPosted on 2003-04-12 at 19:52:43ID: 8320752

did the scroll just not move down at all? or it didnt go down to the very bottom?

by: crefesPosted on 2003-04-13 at 03:45:20ID: 8321555

try this

Private Const SB_BOTTOM = 7
Private Const EM_LINESCROLL = &HB6

SendMessage txtIn.hWnd, EM_LINESCROLL, byval 0&, SB_BOTTOM

i think you could set the txtIn.hWnd to NULL, but it doesnt really matter.

ooops...dont look at my last sentence.

by: Ravi_243Posted on 2003-04-13 at 09:53:33ID: 8322520

I don't know if this is what your after but you could try putting this close in the txtin change event:

Private Sub txtIn_Change()
txtIn.SelStart = Len(txtIn.Text)
End Sub
