Mailing Label Program

I'm newish to VB, so be gentle....

I'm not sure of the complexity of this application, but I would like to setup a "simple" application that allows a user to input an address into a text box, enter a column and row in two more text boxes and click a button that prints the address to one label in the appropriate column and row. I know this can be done in Word, but the users aren't at all computer savvy...

At this point, we don't have a label specified, but most likely will be using Avery 5264 (not sure if you needed to know that).

For those that would like a challenge, if we could substitute a picture or grid in place of the column and row boxes, I think that would create an even easier process for the users.

Anyone?

Hi,

If you want my profesional advise, invest in eductation. Make them learn MS-Word. In the short run, this seems like a "dumb" solution. In the long run, it is worth millions. You create an extra layer above Office, it will (even if you now say it will not) grow larger, and larger and larger, and out of control.

In the company I work for now, we had this situation three years ago. A dumb-ass jerk made a layer above MS-Word, and it now eats up 50% of my working time just to keep it into the air (you don't want to know, believe me.)

Don't go that way, it's full of very very very big warning signs. Education, in the long run, pays off really well.

I subscribe to that theory too, but there actually is a bit of a learning factor, for myself (in VB), the user just gets to shave a minute or so off of her day.

Hi,

There is a workable answer, simple use of the MS-Word object model will do very nicely. If you create a Word.application instance, you have a MailingLabel object. That object you can use to print labels at any given location on a sheet with labels.

The following code demonstrates this by assuming there is a global Word application object, and it will print a label on row 2, column 2.

Private Sub cmdPrint_Click()
  With g_oWordApplication.MailingLabel
    .Name = "5264" ' The name of your "Standard" labelsheet. Use "CustomLabels" to set it to a owner-defined one!
    .Address = "SomeAddress" & vbCrLf & "SomeStreet" & vbcrlf & "Postalcode"
    .NumberAcros = 2  ' Retrieve from picture, second in the cols.
    .NumberDown = 2  ' Retrieve from picture, second in the rows.
    .PrintOut ' Let's print it.
  End With
End Sub

To use this with your picturebox method to "choose" the label to print, you should be clear. But I also stick to my original statement, educate your users, it's healthier (for you and for them). Refunding is fine with me.
