Question

VB6, CR9 and Run-time error '50003'

Asked by: EYoung

Basics:  Windows XP/sp1, Windows 2000/sp4, Visual Basic 6.0 sp5, and Crystal Reports 9.2

I have created an application in VB 6.0 sp5 that has some Crystal Reports 9.2 in it.  The cr reports were created externally in crystal reports and imported into vb.  The application has been running correctly for the past six months on many computers without any errors.

Recently our firm purchased some new computers and when I installed this vb application onto the new computers, I got an error message when trying to run any of the cr reports.  The error message appears when trying to display the report using the CRViewer92 control in the vb application.  The error message is "Run-time error '50003'  Load report failed." and it appears by itself in the CRViewer92 screen.  No report shows.  When I click OK, the application ends.

The vb application does run correctly on these new computers up until I try to show a cr report.  Additionally, the vb application and all cr reports run correctly on all of the other (older) computers in our firm.  Both the newer and older computers are running Windows 2000/sp4.

In vb on my development computer I used the PDW to create a distribution module and then used the setup.exe to do the install.  That process has worked just fine over the past six months and I did not get any error messages during the recent installs on the new computers.  All of the computers are running Windows 2000/sp4 with MDAC 2.8.  However, my development computer is using XP/sp1 with MDAC 2.8.  Could that make a difference?

I suspect that the problem may actually be due to a missing Crystal Reports .dll or .ocx but I am just guessing.  The error message is so crptic and I have not been able to resolve it.

I have gotten around this problem in the past by installing CR 9.0 developer's version onto the new computers, but that is not a good, long-term solution.  (When CR 9.0 is installed on the newer computers, the application runs and does show the reports.  But when I uninstall CR 9.0, the application runs, but does not show the CR reports.  Instead, it shows the above error message.  That tells me it may be a missing .dll or .ocx file(s).)

This question was previously posted in the Crystal Reports area, but was not resolved.  Here is the url for that question so you can see what has been tried so far:  http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Crystal_Reports/Q_20843905.html

Please do not post anything to that older CR question as I will be asking CS to delete it and refund the point.

Would appreciate help fixing this problem.  It is becoming a real problem with our applications here at this client.  Thank you.

On the 'new' machines that are having the problem it is a good likelyhood that they are missing some of the VBRuntime components.

Rather than try to track down the exact component, re-install the VBruntime on one of your machines that get that 50003 error on, reboot, then try to re-run your app.

Let me know what happens after you re-install the VBruntime.

The corollary to this is that when you are installing the developer edition of crystal, it has to install the components for you to be able to build in it.

I agree with you on the missing .dll or .ocx, we just need to narrow down which it is (vb or crystal), so if after re-installing the vbruntime components it still gives that error, it is a .dll or .ocx on the crystal side, and we will go from there.

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-16 at 10:15:12ID: 10131724

I have done that several times and I still get the same error.  I don't think it is any VB components that are missing as the vb applicaton runs just fine on the newer computers.  The error only occurs when I try to show a crystal report in the application.  It looks to me like it must be a missing CR .dll or .ocx.  (?)

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-16 at 10:17:52ID: 10131748

Would I be correct in assuming that when I run the setup.exe (created by vb's PDW) on the newer computers, the VBRuntime components are installed?  If yes, then I have done that many times.

Given the above it sounds like maybe any or all of the following 4 .dll's are missing :

crviewer.dll
sviewhlp.dll
cselexpt.ocx
swebrs.dll

Check those on the newer machines.

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-16 at 12:15:18ID: 10132601

Do you mean crviewer9.dll instead of crviewer.dll?  I have been using crviewer9.dll in the PDW.

I have previously checked out that Crystal Decisions link, tried its suggestions and got the same error message.

I tried your previous suggestion regarding incorporating the above 4 .dll's (crviewer.dll, sviewhlp.dll, cselexpt.ocx, swebrs.dll) but got the same error.

Hrm....You have a tough one...

If you have the time, I'll exhaust everything I can think of, if you dont mind me asking some mundane questions.

In your project, you have references to various crystal components I'm sure.
My geuss is they are the following (not necessarily the exact same version as you)

Crystal Report ActiveX Designer Run Time Library
Crystal Report Viewer Control

You also have some Components added, my geuss is the following :

Crystal Report Viewer Control

The controls and references that these point to I am sure you are including in the PDW when you build the deployment package?

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-16 at 14:30:02ID: 10133620

Yes to the above questions.  See prior question: http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Crystal_Reports/Q_20843905.html

This is a tough question.  Not sure how to proceed.

It seems to me that the missing .dll's or .ocx's are from Crystal Reports because I don't get any errors when I load the developer's version of CR onto the newer computers.  That process must load the correct dlls/ocxs.  Is there any run time version of CR that I could load onto the newer computers that would load the correct files?  I can't go around loading the developer's version on every new computer.  That is against the registration policy from Crystal Decisions.

Would appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Have you tried dependency walker?

If not:

1) copy the dependency walker files to one of the computers that is not working.
2) Run dependency walker, click on file open :
3) Then open the VB executable that you are using to view the crystal reports in.
4) From there, go to the Profiling menu item and click start profiling.
5) You can probably leave all the default options alone in the "profile module" window.
6) Click OK, this will start the VB application, and dependency walker will "watch" what it does, as it does it.
7) Get to the spot where you try to view the crystal report in the VB app.
8) try to view it, and let it error out and die.

Back inside dependency walker, down in the bottom window a LOT of stuff will have occured and been recorded.

Select all of the text in that window, and copy it. Paste that back into a text file.

Next, we need some way for me to get that text file from you so I can parse through it and find your problem, it will definately be in there.

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-16 at 15:40:00ID: 10133960

I have tried Dependency Walker but found it too confusing.  I will, however, follow your advice above and get back to you.  If the text file is too large for EE, then I could email it to you.

by: Shakti109Posted on 2004-01-16 at 15:44:07ID: 10133977

I think this may be the most direct route, as you and I could spend hours and hours picking through each possible .dll.

I use dependency walker quite a bit and am used to looking through its verbose output so I am definately willing to take a shot at it for you.

OK, I ran DW.  Then just before the error occurred, I cleared the DW log window so you would not have so much text to look through.  (If that was the wrong thing to do, I will rerun it without clearing the log window on Monday).

So everything below is after my clicking the vb control used to show the report up to and including the point of CR showing the 'Run-time error 50003' in a dialog box with an 'OK' button.

Below I have indicated the one line that was in RED.

About half way down I have also indicated where I clicked the 'OK' button on the error dialog box.  From that point on, the program just unloads itself.

Thanks for the help and the guidance on running DW.   I think DW could be a useful tool now that I understand it better.  Looking forward to reading your analysis.

I need to leave now for the weekend.  Back Monday at 9:00 a.m. PDT (California time.)

Ironically enough, that red line (the warning), isnt the problem. The "IsTNT()" function call is checking to see if the (Template Numerical Toolkit) is  active, which can be used for running WinNT console apps in a DOS environment (it has numerical objects, and other c++ stuff).
The dependency walker website used to have something on it in its FAQ as it appears often in profiles (it may still have something about it in its FAQ). That warning is completely "ignore-able".

By the looks of the profile, there was nothing the app couldnt "find" or instantiate, which makes me suspicious of the versions of what is there and think less that something is actually missing. It can find what it wants to use, but when it tries to use it, it dies out.

It is possible for multiple versions of the same .dll to exist on 2K/XP. When you install the CR developer edition it installs a newer version of a .dll and registers that one and the app works, when you un-install it the newer version goes away and the old one is left holding the bag and the app dosent work again.

We use Crystal here as well and I am one of the people who does software distribution to our enterprise, so monday (im writing this sunday), I will check out the MSI installation for the crystal developer edition to see what it has in it.

Can you do me another favor, on a working machine (not your development box though), do the same thing with the profile wizard. Run the app and open a report (only need to see the detail of the profile right before you try to open the crystal report, through right after it actually opens). I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something.

Thank you so much for your help with this problem.  Below is the DW text from a working machine (not my development machine).  Per your request, it only shows the text from just before I click the control to run the report until just after the report successfully displays on the screen.

Following this listing I have also included a listing of (only) error messages that occurred "prior" to my clicking the control to run the report.  These seem to always appear whether or not the report runs successfully and may be nothing but I thought I would include them just in case they shed some light on the problem.  (These error messages were mixed in throughout the text messages, so I just selected out only the error messages to give you less to look through.)

I am glad you asked me to do this as it caused me to realize that I do not have a "working" machine that can run this application.  I have developed many applications over the years using VB 6 sp5 with CR 7 and 8.  But this may be the first application that uses VB6 sp5 with CR 9.  Additionally, the technique I have used over the years to distribute the applications has always been the same.  (Write the VB 6 app., write the CR report in CR, add the CR report into the VB app., run the PDW and create the .CAB distribution module along with the Setup.exe, run the Setup.exe on the target machines, and show the users how to use the app.)  That process has worked just fine.  Now, however, the only way I can get this app. to run on the users' computers is to install CR developer's version onto their computers.  Anyway, that is a long way of saying that this app. has not run successfully on any machine that does not have CR deveopers module already installed.  The only other variable that I can think of is that my development computer runs Windows XP while the user's computers all run W/2000.  That change occurred about the same time I began working with CR 9 instead of CR 8.  Hope that is understandable and helps.

Most of those errors are relating to procedure calls checking to see if a particular function is available and mostly ignore-able.

While I dont want to discount the difference in O/S as a potential problem, the above trap from the "working" computer adds another dimension to the problem. There are a lot of Crystal specific .DLL's that it is calling dynamically that may not be present on the "non-working" machine, at least 30 so far by my count :

CRQE.DLL
CRDB_ODBC.DLL
ACPDFUI210.DLL
UFMANAGER.DLL
CRTOWORDS_EN.DLL
U2L2000.DLL
U3120xx.DLL
U3120ENU.dll
U2Lcom.dll
U2LDTS.dll
u3ldtenu.dll
u2lexch.dll
u3lxcxx.dll
u2lfinra.dll
u2lgl.dll
u2lpjenu.dll
u2lpjloc.dll
u2lsamp1.dll
u2ltech1.dll
u2lts.dll
u2ltsLOC.dll
u2ltsENU.dll
u252000.dll
U3520xx.dll
U3520ENU.dll
U25DTS.dll
u35s1xx.dll
keycode.dll
u25total.dll
u25store.dll
u35s1ENU.dll
u35s1xx.dll
u35s1EN.dll
u35dtEN.dll
u35dtENU.dll
u35dtxx.dll
u3520en.dll

I am going to go through the dumps again, and re-check the above.

Thank you for the help.  Is there anything I can do to assist you?

by: mlmccPosted on 2004-01-19 at 16:09:10ID: 10151288

I would look at these in particular
CRQE.DLL
CRDB_ODBC.DLL

Most of the U*.dlls are for backward compatabiity or if present allow extra features.  I don't know if any of them are required.

Look at these recommendations from jrmn in
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Crystal_Reports/Q_20845737.html

I will recommend to you to check these 2 utilities :

RPTCHK32.EXE - The purpose of this utility is to load a Report, analyse it for the Runtime Files it requires, and then provide you with the results of the analysis.

CRWCHK32.EXE - This utility was meant to be run on a client machine.  You tell it what Crystal version you are distributing, and which options you want to scan for, and it will search out the DLL's and tell you if the versions are what was expected or not.  It will list all the versions of the files that it finds in the Windows search path, along with their versions, dates, and sizes.  It will also record any that it does not find.

mlmcc:

1.  Your reference to incorporating CRAXDRT9.dll was something I have already done as noted in my first posting.  You even helped me make sure that I was including the Runtime only and not the Design and Runtime version.  See posting in original question dated 01/12/2004 04:17PM PST.

2.  I think the two utilities (RPTCHK32.EXE AND CRWCHK32.EXE) are for Crystal Reports 8.0/8.5 and not for the version I am using 9.0 per Crystal Decisions web site.

by: mlmccPosted on 2004-01-19 at 17:48:28ID: 10151812

I suspect the utilities only come with the CD and not part of the download.

What happens if you install CR9 developer on a machine then install the app and then uninstall CR9?  Does it run?

I wrote up a short vb-script to parse out the text above for the things im looking for while I was at work on monday. I will post up the results of that tomorrow morning (teusday).

Some of the calls dont appear to be useful (kind of like that "isTNT" warning), so i will throw those out to start with.

Im just glad we were able to get you able to use dependency walker, and the realization that you really didnt have any "working" installations hehehe, so as to the assistance, that will come tomorrow, after I pull out all the things that look necessary from the dump, and toss out the stuff that seems un-necessary we will add those either to your PDW, or just copy them over to one of the machines and register them.

by: EYoungPosted on 2004-01-20 at 10:03:16ID: 10156876

mlmcc - I searched the CR 9 CD for the two utilities and did not find them.  That is when I went to the CR web site and saw that the utilitites are for CR 8/8.5 and apparently not CR 9.   Regarding installing and uninstalling CR 9 developer on the machines - when I install CR9, the app works just fine.  When I uninstall CR9, the app gives the same error message.  That seems to me to point to the problem being a missing or outdated dll/ocx.  See notes in this question and previous question.

Shakti109 - Thanks for the help.  I work at the client's offices on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays so I will not be able to do any work/testing for you until tomorrow.  I too am glad to now understand how to make DW work.  It seems like a  useful tool.  The final step will be to resolve the app problem and to see how DW pointed to the solution.  It would be nice to read and understand the line(s) in DW that identified the problem so I could use DW in the future to solve this type of problem.  Thanks also for helping me see that no machine has successfully been running the application.  I completely missed that.

My thanks to both of you for the help and sticking with me on this.  Both of you will get points when we resolve this problem.

Ok, I parsed the list a few times to get everything and pulled out the calls that didnt go through.

Again, if you have the time, I'll work at this until we either exhaust every possible option, or get it solved, so here goes the next step. I am going to leave the full path on these so it gives you an idea of where they are.

Because these all successfully returned function calls, without knowing exactly which function was used from them, it may be hard to determine which are "critical" and which are more secondary.

I would probably take the grenade approach. Get all of these together, put 'em on the "non-working" machine, run the app. If it works and you want to pare down what you have to send, remove them one at a time until it breaks again. The only drawback to that is it may break again in the future.

OK.  I will work on that tomorrow morning first thing and let you know.  Thanks again for the help.

I knew you had installed CR9 and the app worked.  My thought was if you installed CR9 on a clean machine, then the application that the missing dlls might get marked as shared or used by another application so that when you uninstalled CR9 they would remain.  If the app then still worked you could compare certain directories looking at the Crystal files and maybe determine which ones were missing.

Shakti109 - Do I include the above .dlls in the PDW Dependency file or the Standard Setup Package or both?  I am unclear what the difference is.  It seems to me that VB apps are dependent on the .dll files so the above files should be included in the Dependency file.  Then again, there are .dlls that are included in the Standard Setup Package.

Where should I add the above .dll files?  Thanks.

I usually use the Standard Setup Package (that is when I use the package and destroy wizard).

Dependency files can be used by the PDW to determine which files are needed, where they need to go, how they get registered etc. It is essentially an INI file with a .DEP extension used to store that information in a file that can be used again. Also, it can be distributed with say a component you are "selling" so that it can be incorporated by others (who can in turn take the .dep file and use it to compile your component into their "solution").

Add them into the Standard Setup Package.

Hurray, hurray, hurray.  It works, it works, it works.

Here is what I did.  I followed Shakti109's advice about adding the above 22 dll's into the PDW and re-installing the app on the target computer.  That worked and the application now runs correctly (it shows the CR reports without errors.)  I don't have the time to back out any possibly unneeded dlls to see which ones were actually needed.  I also do not know why the missing dlls were not automatically included by VB in the PDW - why did I have to tell vb to include them in the PDW?  Any ideas?

Additionally, I solved another problem I was having with the install.  When I ran the install, it told me that it was copying three files (cmdlg32.dll, mpr.dll and comctl32.dll).  When the copy was done, the installer said that some system files were out of date and that I would need to reboot in order for these to be updated.  However, each time I rebooted, the same three files were copied and the same reboot message would appear - thus not letting me even get to the install of the vb app.  I was getting around this by creating the PDW on a W/2000 development machine and not my developmet W/XP machine.  The way I solved this problem was first to recognize that these three files were system files (not vb/cr/app files) and since they were coming from my XP machine and being copied to a W/2000 machine, the W/2000 machine was smart enough to not allow that to happen.  (It, fortunately, stopped me from shooting myself in the foot.)  When I finally realized that these three files were system files, I just removed them from inclusion in the VB PDW and the copy/reboot error went away.  Now you might ask why was VB trying to install these three system files in the first place, and the answer was that I added them manually to the PDW a month ago or so when I was experimenting with various methods of resolving the original CR problem.  So that was my fault.

Anyway, the problems are solved and the application now works perfectly.

My thanks to both of you.  I am going to be awarding Shakti109 the 500 points for this question and mlmcc the 250 points for the older question as soon as CS deletes and refunds the points from the older question.  (I put in the request on 1/19) see:  http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/Community_Support/Q_20855507.html  I will be accepting the comment as EXCELLENT.

CS should delete and refund this week.  I will monitor and award as soon as CS finishes this.

Thank you again for sticking with me on this.

Shakti109 - How did you come up with the list of dlls that you provided?  Did you just go through the text output from DW and look for all CR dlls that were successfully loaded on the machine that did work?  Am I correct in that assumption?  I would like to know specifically how you did this so I can do it in the future myself. Thanks also for teaching me how to run and read DW.

Here is a Microsoft link explaining the cause and some solutions to the above mentioned copy and reboot loop.  They refer to the question as:  Multiple "System Files Are Out of Date" Errors.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q191/0/96.ASP&NoWebContent=1

I tried their suggestions but they did not help.  It was not until I recognized and removed the three "system" files from the VB PDW that the problem went away.  In hindsight, that makes sense.  There is also an interesting reference to MDAC_TYP.exe in the MS link.  See item #6.

You are correct in your assumption. I looked at the "non-working" DW dump, then compared it to the "working" dump. I threw out anything that didnt successfully return a call, things like :

GetProcAddress(0x1F9C0000 [c:\winnt\system32\SQLSRV32.DLL], "SQLAllocConnect") called from "c:\winnt\system32\ODBC32.DLL" at address 0x1F7AB051 and returned NULL. Error: The specified procedure could not be found (127).

Since it didnt return a call -AND- the app still worked, this smelled like something that was just doing a "are you there" kind of call and not really necessary like the "isTNT" call.

The next step was to compare where the "working" machine basically kept going and the non-working one stopped. This was at the oleaut32 dll call, the working machine kept going and continued to call functions and move on.

This was a special case however. We were lucky to have a working computer. In this case, the CR functions werent loaded or needed right up until they were excercised so they werent shown in the non-working DW dump. I further made an educated geuss that it was a CR .DLL since the next most recent call was to a CR .dll. It probably was asking for a function that depended on something from another CR .dll (where CRAXDRT9.DLL is unloading).

If we hadnt have had a working "normal" machine to compare to, we would have to use your development box. I dont like using development boxes for DW dumps as they are usually loaded up with all kinds of stuff that wont exist on normal machines (I know mine is hehe) and in turn might actually answer calls which makes the job of determining the necessary files that much harder.

As to why the PDW didnt pick up the need for those files. The PDW only knows about stuff it can instantiate at the time. It dosent have a dynamic dependency search type of knowledge, it is relying on us the developers to know what our app needs when it comes to that.

The following link at microsoft has various other links regarding the package and deployment wizard that I have used to figure out what it was doing :

Thank you for the explanation about using DW.  It is a good tool.

I just checked on whether or not CS had deleted and refunded the points from the old question in the CR area.  They have not done that yet.  Sorry about this delay.  I will check later today and tomorrow and each day until they get it taken care of.

Not a problem EYoung, I'm just happy to be getting a technical workout, the points are a nice bonus, but I am gaining a lot of practice / knowledge by getting to experience so many diverse and challenging questions hehehe.

Shakti109 - thank you for all the help and for sticking with me on this.  We have all learned some things that can help us in the future.  My client says thank you also.

mlmcc - I could not see how to increase the points on this question in order to award you the 250 for the first question so I created a new question for you.  See:  http://oldlook.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Visual_Basic/Q_20860859.html
