Question

VBScript - wait for method to complete before continuing

Asked by: dogztar

So, I'm working on a VBScript to run on our anti-virus servers which will backup and <<then perform DB maintenance>> on some log files.  Part of the script uses the FSO.CopyFolder method to copy the files to another location.  The problem is, sometimes there may only be 20MB to copy, sometimes 1.5GB.  I would like the script to wait until the CopyFolder method completes before continuing with processing, without using a wscript.sleep() call.  Is there any way to wait for that to complete the copy, then proceed with the script execution?  If I was writing a batch file, I would use start /w copy file backup, for example...

I was thinking to set a variable to the return value of CopyFolder...?

I'm pretty sure that by using File System Object copy folder that this runs synchronously and you will not be able to do anything until it is complete.

Create a second script that contains only the copy method and call it from the first script. Then create a DO UNTIL loop in the first script that checks the status of the copy script and hold it in the loop until the status reports back as complete.

Also you may want to use the Move method of File System Object rather than copying 1.5 GB and then deleting it, Moving it would be much more efficient and happen almost instantaneously as long as the move is on the same server.

by: ScrptMastaPosted on 2004-06-09 at 09:40:03ID: 11271816

This would only be true if the move is from one location to another on the same volume. If the move spans across multiple volumes the method will act the same as the copy because a move between volumes is a copy and delete not just a move.

SRigney:

You are correct, it is a synchronous operation.  The problem is I'm trying to modify this existing script and whoever wrote it apparently didn't know that, so they stuck a Sleep(50000) in after the copy command.  And I made an error in my description, I need to first delete the content of the target folder, then copy the files, then run an external .exe utility against the files in that folder, which is why I can't use the MoveFolder method.

Thanks to everyone else for their input.  I take it there still isn't an official VBScript TA?  I did a search and found plenty of requests in the New Topics TA to add one, but no indication it ever was added...

Not that it matters, but I think the Vb area is a good enough location for the VBScript code.  It's close enough and with late binding vbscript code can become almost identical to VB that it's the logic and syntax that's most important.
