Browse All TopicsI've got minimal skills in VB.6, relatively speaking.
My code reads as a paper... it just gets the job done.
I understand the benefits of object oriented programming, however I'm not savy to it yet. If I need to learn another language, which one (if any) should I switch to? I am an engineer, and writing applications is a necessity. Although I can put out fires without programming, doing so is a waste of time.
So, my question (however subjective) is:
Switch to Vb.net, or something else?
Granted a learning curve will be present if I switch at all... which I think I should. So... switch to what? If I learn a new language... which one will be around the longest... which one will make it easier to transition again in the future?
Thanks to all,
B.

If you are primarily interested in using Windows then you should probably consider a transition to the .Net platform. That leaves you with a choice of VB.Net and/or C#. Since you already know VB6 then it is only natural for you to go ahead and make the move to VB.Net. In any case, once you get some experience with .Net through learning VB.Net then you can consider learning C# as well. I think in your case that learning VB.Net will be good enough for most things you want to do.
Still, VB6 is not a dead language and if you already know it then it will probably do most of the stuff you need to do. So, I'd say you have some time still before you NEED to move to .Net.
