The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Maximum Font Size for Text Box

Asked by lehman6676 in Visual Basic Programming, Adobe Type Manager, Font Creator

Tags: ,

I need to have text as big as possible in a textbox.  I use the following code to try fitting the text until it's perfect.  The problem is that I have one very complex opentype font which takes a while each iteration and it's not moving quick enough.  How can I do this faster.  I played with the numbers a bit, but there must be some computation to help me get close to the right font size on the first try so I don't have to do so many loops.
Thanks

The object sent to these functions are my textbox

Public Function FontTooBig(obj As Object) As Boolean
    Dim WindowHandle As Long
    WindowHandle = obj.hWnd
    obj.SelStart = Len(obj.Text)
    LinesNotVisible = SendMessage(WindowHandle, EM_GETFIRSTVISIBLELINE, 0, 0)
    If LinesNotVisible <> 0 Then
        FontTooBig = True
    Else
        FontTooBig = False
    End If
End Function

Public Sub AdjustToFitFont(obj As Object)
    If obj.Text = "" Then
        Exit Sub
    End If
    Dim DecreasedFontSize As Boolean
    DecreasedFontSize = False
    While (FontTooBig(obj) Or obj.FontSize > PrefFontSize) And LinesNotVisible > 0
        obj.FontSize = obj.FontSize - IIf(obj.FontSize - (LinesNotVisible * 7) < 14, 3, (LinesNotVisible * 7))
        DecreasedFontSize = True
    Wend

    While (Not FontTooBig(obj) And obj.FontSize < PrefFontSize)
        obj.FontSize = obj.FontSize + IIf(DecreasedFontSize, 3, 7)
    Wend

    While (FontTooBig(obj) Or obj.FontSize > PrefFontSize)
        obj.FontSize = obj.FontSize - 1
        counter = counter + 1
    Wend
End Sub
