The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem registering msvbvm60.dll on a particular XP machine: error message that that it's in use by another application". Inno installer used

Experts please

My VB6 app, now several years old, installs and updates properly on all user machines with one exception, an XP laptop that's some years old. On this machine, the installer for the upgrades (see below) throws an error message to the effect that msvbvm60.dll is in use by another application. If the user clicks "ignore" the installation finishes apparently normally. Some things aren't working properly in my app on this laptop, which I attribute to the failure to install the newer dll.

The laptop's version for the dll is 6.0.96.90 -- the installer is attempting to overwrite it with 6.0.97.82.

As the installer for updates, I'm using Inno, with this line in the script:

Source: c:\program files\randem systems\innoscript\innoscript 5.0\vb 6 redist files\msvbvm60.dll; DestDir: {sys}; Flags: sharedfile

Questions

1. Is there any way to find out which if app is using msvbvm60.dll so it can be turned off -- assuming this really is the problem?

2. Is there any simple way for the user to close any apps using msvbvm60.dll -- assuming this really is the problem?

3. The initial installation of my app is with Visual Studio Installer. Is the newer version likely to overwrite successfully if I do an uninstall/install with the Visual Studio Installer? (The user won't lose any data)

4. Any other suggestions?

All advice gratefully received

Gordon
