The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Remote system info over network ?

Asked by gecko_au2003 in Visual Basic Programming

I am aware of WMI but wanted to know what the best method is to attain various system information on a various machine or machines in a domain.

I attempted to make a simple app to start with but find myself using different wmi connections because of the different win32 wmi classes required to get the information I am after.

Is there anyway to speed it up so that I can get this information without it lagging or taking a while to pull the information of remote systems ?

I can post the code. Am sure there is quite a bit wrong with it.

btw the information I am looking for on a remote system is

Operating system
Amount of RAM ( ie slot 1 : 256 mb DDR SDRAM, Slot 2 : 256Mb DDR SDRAM )
CPU Make and model along with speed ie Intel Pentium 4 Northwood LGA 775 2.6Ghz with 2mb Level 2 Cache
Service Pack - if any
Machine name aka netbios name
The Domain that the machine is in or attached to.
machine serial number
Network card where ip is enabled
Ip address of NIC
Subnet
Default gateway
DHCP Enabled
MAC Address of NIC

I have only started out with some of the above but find that it is lagging already trying to get this info on remote machines.

My vb 6 app enumerates all the machine on AD into a listbox and then on the click event I use wmi to attain the serial number , Name of NIC, MAC Address of NIC and IP Address of NIC ( not in that order though )

Hope I am not asking too much.
