The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Filter Combobox's options
Hi , a VB6 combobox question.

I have 2 comboboxes - Practice and Doctors. At this stage there is a default PRACTICE and it's default DOCTOR is displayed..

Once we've added new PRACTICE and DOCTORS records, I'd like the Doctors.combobox to only contain the Doctors belonging to the PRACTICE that is selected in the practice.combobox. Each practice has a default dr, so the doctors list. index record still needs to be the one marked as default.

DOCTORS.mdb contains fields DRS_ID (index) and  DRS_PracID & DRS_Default (descriptors)

Do i just change:
PATDoctor.ItemData(PATDoctor.NewIndex) = .Fields("DRS_DrID")             to  something like
PATDoctor.ItemData(PATDoctor.NewIndex) = .Fields("DRS_DrID") AND .Fields("DRS_PracID") = Val (PRAC_ID ( current Practice.combobox context ??) (help with syntax please)  )

Many thanks

Peter

Here's the code:

'Display Default Practice
Dim DSPractice As Recordset
    '
    Set DSPractice = CURDB.OpenRecordset("Select * from PRACTICES", dbOpenDynaset)
    DoEvents

    With DSPractice
        Do While Not .EOF
            PATPractice.AddItem .Fields("PRAC_PracName")
            PATPractice.ItemData(PATPractice.NewIndex) = .Fields("PRAC_PracID")
            If .Fields("PRAC_Default").Value = "True" Then
                PATPractice.ListIndex = PATPractice.NewIndex ' Set current selection
                DefaultPracID = .Fields("PRAC_PracID")
            End If

        .MoveNext
        Loop
    End With
    PATPractice.Refresh

'Display default doctor
    Dim DSDoctors As Recordset
    Set DSDoctors = CURDB.OpenRecordset("Select * from doctors order by DRS_Surname", dbOpenDynaset)
    DoEvents

    With DSDoctors
        Do While Not .EOF
            PATDoctor.AddItem .Fields("DRS_Surname")
            PATDoctor.ItemData(PATDoctor.NewIndex) = .Fields("DRS_DrID")
            If .Fields("DRS_Default").Value = "True" Then
                PATDoctor.ListIndex = PATDoctor.NewIndex ' Set current selection
                DefaultDrID = .Fields("DRS_DrID")
            End If

        .MoveNext
        Loop
    End With
'    PATDoctor.Refresh

Thanks Emoueau

I'm afraid i'm looking for VB6 solutions to the existing code. Keep up the good work on the .net tutorials. I hope to visit them one day when I try learn .net. I have upped the points to keep this question open.

Regards

Peter

It might be worth you storing a copy of the Doctors data in a form level array.  In that array, include the associated practice ID for each doctor.  When the Practices combo box is changed, clear the combo box, and refill it by looping through the array of doctors and only adding the doctors that have a matching practice ID.

That sounds like it.
I understand this would involve adding a combo.click function to the routine (which presently runs on FormLoad) . If TRUE, then please remember I'm a newbie and will need to see how to reference this new routine in the existing routine,  and also how to write the code for the new function.

I'll up the points for a solution that can more or less be copied and pasted.

Lets name them:
PATPractice (combobox)
PATDoctor (combobox)
Dim DoctorsArray as ARRAY
PRACTICES.  PRAC_ID
DOCTORS.   DRS _surname,     _practiceID,        _IsDefault

Many thanks

Peter

Fortunately for you, the recordset object has a conveinent method called getRows().  It returns all the record from the recordset into a variant array.  So you will need to do the following:

At the form level, dimension the array:
Dim varDoctorsArray() as Variant

In the form load, where you currently fill the doctors combobox, change the code to be what I have written in the attached snippet under "Form Load: Populate the Doctors Array"
In the Click event of the practice combobox, add the code below titled "Practice Combo Click Event: Populate the Doctors Combo".

You may need to check my syntax, I've been working in vb.net recently, but I'm pretty sure everything is correct.

Try this out, and let me know how things go.
