Question

The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" has not been registered.

Asked by: adamchicago

Thanks for any help!  I get this error when running the code:

ERROR:
"The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" has not been registered."

Code line where error occurs (line 10 in snippet below I think):
"cn.Execute(strSQL, lngRecsAff, ADODB.ExecuteOptionEnum.adExecuteNoRecords)"

I've done some major online searching for this and haven't found a direct solution.
FYI I am running on a Vista 64 machine with Visual Studios 2008 and SQL Server 2008

'IMPORT DATA INTO TABLE USING OPENDATASOURCE.
        Dim cn As ADODB.Connection
        Dim strSQL As String
        Dim lngRecsAff As Long
        cn = New ADODB.Connection
        cn.Open("Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=ADAMS-LAPTOP-PC\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=" & sharedDBnm & ";Integrated Security=SSPI")

        strSQL = "SELECT * INTO " & Me.modulenmTB.Text & " FROM OPENDATASOURCE('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Data Source=" & Me.pathtoimportdataTB.Text & ";Extended Properties=Excel 8.0')...[Sheet1$]"

        sharedcmd = New SqlCommand(strSQL, mySharedConn)

        Debug.Print(strSQL)
        cn.Execute(strSQL, lngRecsAff, ADODB.ExecuteOptionEnum.adExecuteNoRecords)
        Debug.Print("Records affected: " & lngRecsAff)

        MsgBox("TABLE DATA IMPORTED")

I read through that lengthy string and still haven't had any success...any ideas?

I tried going to the project properties and tried setting the target CPU to all of the 3 possible settings with no luck:
-x86
-x64
-Any CPU

did you try the suggestions having 0 votes only?
for example, trying to register the .dll again?

by: adamchicagoPosted on 2009-08-06 at 09:54:56ID: 25035568

When I tried registering the .dll's again two of them registered but 3 didn't and the only work around for that was to reinstall an older version of Jet 4 on my machine but then I worry about how that will effect the rest of the applications on my computer.  Also in Visual Basic I switched the target CPU from x64 to x86 and I also tried using Ace instead of Jet and it ran into it's own problems with Vista 64.  I really do not know what to do now.  Also I'm wondering but how does Microsoft Access import from Excel? ...if it can do it, why can't I use that method in my app, and what is that method? ...any ideas?

>but how does Microsoft Access import from Excel?
well, possibly because it's the same software vendor? :)

>and the only work around for that was to reinstall an older version of Jet 4 on my machine
should do it. a bit of testing on another (virtual/spare) machine would be the best way, however.

Thanks for you help...it led me to all sorts of information on the topic, unfortunately I'm still not able to connect to Excel via Jet 4.
