Question

Open IE7, add text to username and password field

Asked by: ahammar

Hi experts,

Does anyone know of any code in VB6 that will work to open a webpage in default browser (or IE7 which is my default browser) and enter a value in the username and password box.  I know the name of the boxes and the forms they are on.  I have Vista 64 bit system.

The code I used to use on XP does not work!

Thanks!

Here is a VB.Net example of how to open up Google and then search for "Idle_Mind":

Public Class Form1

    ' Click on Project --> Add Reference --> COM Tab --> Select "Microsoft Internet Controls".

    Private loggedIn As Boolean = False
    Private WithEvents IE As SHDocVw.InternetExplorer

    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        If Not (IE Is Nothing) Then
            IE.Quit()
            IE = Nothing
        End If

        loggedIn = False
        IE = New SHDocVw.InternetExplorer
        IE.Visible = True
        IE.Navigate2("http://www.google.com")
    End Sub

    Private Sub IE_DocumentComplete(ByVal pDisp As Object, ByRef URL As Object) Handles IE.DocumentComplete
        If Not loggedIn Then
            loggedIn = True
            IE.Document.All.Item("q").Value = "Idle_Mind"
            IE.Document.All("btnG").Click()
        End If
    End Sub

    Private Sub IE_OnQuit() Handles IE.OnQuit
        IE = Nothing
    End Sub

End Class

Thanks Idle_Mind,

But I have VB6.  To start with, I do not have a "Microsoft Internet Controls" reference in my references.
Secondly, I do not understand how to put your code into a module.  It does not accept it.  I never did get into "class" so I don't know how to use that.
If it's simple enough to explain, and there is another way to do it without that reference, please do so...if it's more complicated than that, then I don't expect you to completey teach me how to use the "class" code that you provided.

Can this even be done with VB6?  I know thats becoming a little behind the times in this day and age...
If this will work, then it seems like there would be some steps involved in using your code that I do not know

I'm so sorry...you even clearly stated VB6 in your description.  =\

Pretty sure I've got an example of it in VB6 as well...lemme see if I can find it...

It looks pretty much the same in VB6:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Languages/Visual_Basic/Q_21252599.html

You still need to add a reference to "Microsoft Internet Controls" for your project:

Option Explicit

Private firstPage As Boolean
Private WithEvents IE As InternetExplorer

Private Sub Command1_Click()
    firstPage = True
    Set IE = CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application")
    IE.navigate "www.google.com"
    IE.Visible = True
End Sub

Private Sub IE_DocumentComplete(ByVal pDisp As Object, URL As Variant)
    If firstPage Then
        firstPage = False
        IE.Document.All.Item("q").Value = "Idle_Mind"
        IE.Document.All("btnG").Click
    End If
End Sub

Hi Idle_Mind,
Sorry it took me so long to get back here.  I have so much setting up to do with this new computer...I'm sure you know how that is...installing all the stuff you want back on it and everything back the way you want it...it really sucks and is really time consuming...especially when it's a different OS

Anyway, I'ved been trying to get your code to work but I get a type mismatch error on line 8
Any ideas why?

I've added the "Microsoft Internet Controls" reference (I had to figure out where it was and browse for it, but I did find it)

I am not familiar with "WithEvents" so I don't know how to work with it.  I assume it must have something to do with getting the second sub to run because I don't see anything that calls it.

I'd be willing to bet this works fine on XP, but it's not working for me on Vista.  I had a nice app that opened all my web pages and entered my username and password and logged me in that I've used for years on XP, but it just don't work on Vista.

Do you know what might be wrong?

Thanks!
Albert

Unfortunately I don't have VB6 installed on my machine anymore...   =\

You're correct about WithEvents...that allows the code to trap the DocumentComplete() Event for the "IE" object we create.

I'm running Windows 7 and was able to get that code working in an Excel 2007 UserForm.

Below is a picture of the reference as it appears in Excel:

by: ahammarPosted on 2009-09-07 at 10:05:18ID: 25276251

Ok...I tried it in Excel 2007.  My references are exactly the same as the pic you uploaded.
It opens the web page but that's it...it doesn't enter anything anywhere or search for anything.
Vista even has it so you you can't use sendkeys...it denies you...not that that's a good option anyway, but I did try it.

Can you upload an excel file that is working and I'll just try it.  If it doesn't work, then I may have to find some other way of  doing this.  What should work doesn't, so I may have to give this up...:-(   Points are yours now anyway for all this help...plus I learned a little bit about "WithEvents"

Thanks!
Albert

Here is a bare bones Excel document.  It has a UserForm with a Button on it.  When the button is clicked it should launch Google and then search for "Idle_Mind Experts Exchange".

Worked fine for me in Excel 2007 running under Windows 7.

  • Book1.xls
    • 32 KB

    Example in Excel 2007 running under Win 7

by: ahammarPosted on 2009-09-07 at 11:00:20ID: 25276473

Well, your bare bones Excel document looked exactly like mine did when I first tried it...Form, code and all...lol
It didn't work at first, but I am on my way to finding out why.  It has something to do with IE having protected mode turned on (I didn't know it had a protected mode you could turn on and off).  I turned it off, and it works fine...although that's highly not recommended...but I'm not too worried about that.  I don't surf much and I trust all the sights I go to.  I'm gonna experiment with the security settings and such and set it where it needs to be to still work.
So it never was the code...it was fine all along.

If my original app still doesn't work (the one I've used for years on XP)...which I'm pretty sure it won't...then I'll probably have more questions coming up.  My original app would go and search the web page and find the name of the username and password box, then I would use that for the code when entering my username and password (which was stored in a file of course)...I'm pretty sure that's not gonna work anymore like it is, so I'm probably gonna have to figure out another way to find the names of the boxes so I can have my code fill them in...that'll be another question though on down the road...

Anyway...this turned out good!  Thanks for the help!

:-)

Thanks again!  I think I can figure this out now...If not...I'll be back...:-)

by: ahammarPosted on 2009-09-07 at 11:14:35ID: 25276538

Forgot to mention also just for any future references...I had to add a line of code at the end of the second sub to set IE = to nothing...otherwise it would not work 2 times in a row...

My old app does work now except it doesn't bring IE to the front, so I gotta fix that part and it might be ok.  I'm also thinking about changing this over to an Excel file now anyway...that will be much easier to store my info that way...plus I can just add it to my already existing check register file which is when I use it most anyway...
