Question

Why can i read some registry settings and not others?

Asked by: Mach1pro

I'm needing to read some registry values. I don't have any problem setting the values in the registry, but I can't read them back. I've tried using the QueryValue api function and I've tried a ReadKey function that uses wscript.  What's weird is that some values can be read and other can't. For instance both functions will retrieve this value:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyEnable"

but neither function would return a value for this key and NO the key isn't empty:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ProxyServer"

Anyone got any ideas on what's going on?

Hi Mach1pro,

It will be difficult to get to the root of the problem without your source code. I can see from the two example you posted that one is of type REG_DWORD and the other is of type REG_SZ. Depending on what API you are trying to use you will need to supply the correct buffers and or specify the registry type flag. I think your problem could be your only allocating 4 bytes into the buffer which is correct when working with REG_DWORD.

Can you post the source code for a fix?

When using the ReadKey function, here is all there is to the function:

Public Function ReadKey(Value As String) As String
'READ FROM WINDOWS REGISTRY
'.........................
Dim b As Object
Dim r As Variant
On Error Resume Next
Set b = CreateObject("wscript.shell")
r = b.RegRead(Value)
ReadKey = r
End Function

When using the QueryValue api function, here's the meat of the code:

Private Sub QueryValue(Where As Long, sKeyName As String, sValueName As String)
Dim lRetVal As Long         'result of the API functions
Dim hKey As Long         'handle of opened key
Dim vValue As Variant      'setting of queried value

Okay, I will have a look at your code

BTW: In your example you showed two registry settings that are related to proxy information are you trying to read IE proxy information or did you use these as examples. If you need proxy information there is a better way to determine the information using InternetQueryOptionW.

I'm writing a small VB6 app for my workplace that will allow us to restrict internet access to only a few sites.  Everything works fine. I can write the values to the registry without a problem. BUT, I want to read back the list of allowed sites and put them in a list box for the administrator to see so that they can go back and either add more allowed sites or remove allowed sites. If I can't read the key value though, then I can't do this.

Hi,
What is the registry location are you refering to this location?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

Where each (KEY) is the name of the site and the subkey www has DWORD value.
Trusted Sites = 2
Restricted Sites = 4

This what you are talking about? Please post location in registry which is causing problems.

Whoops..

Private Const REG_DWORD = 1&
Private Const REG_SZ = 4&

Should be:

Private Const REG_DWORD = 4&
Private Const REG_SZ = 1&

You can actually remove these two constants all together my code doesn't need them but I just wanted to correct the values. :)
