Windows NT/Vista Username and Password validation

Hello experts,

I'm writing a VB6 program in which I want to present the user with form in which they can enter a windows username and password that will later be used to create Services on the machine. I would like to include a check that validates these values, before I hand over the information to the 3rd party installer that will use it during install.

How do I do that using windows APIs?

Not quite. I want to check, when the username and the password is entered, that the information is valid. See, I hand this over to the SQL Server Express installer that will then proceed to install itself silently, and the last thing I want to happen is for it to fall over because the user didn't enter their username or password correctly. So when they type in the username or password I want to ask windows "is this login information valid" and for windows to come back yay or nay.
