The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

UDP-Broadcasting --> Winsock.RemoteHost and IPs

Asked by GPrentice00 in VB Controls

Found a page in the PAQs on making a UDP broadcaster:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Visual_Basic/Q_20107338.html

Shows that setting the RemoteHost property to "255.255.255.255" is used to broadcast to all.  Similar hits on the web elsewhere.

On my home machine using a broadband router this side of the cablemodem, all our machine IPs are 192.168.0.X, x=1 is the LAN IP address (web-interface to router), and the IP pool uses x=100 to 199.

Assuming the 255s to be a wildcard when used this way, I tried setting the remotehost property to "192.168.0.255", and my broadcaster worked just the same as with all 255s

My broadcaster will be used in an environment where all computers to be knock-knocked will all be similarly grouped:  A.B.C.x where A,B,C are constant (A,B designating the university, C designating my department), although most of the machines in this block won't be involved in getting the broadcast...  NONE of the machines outside this block will be involved in the broadcast.

Is my Assumption/Result correct:  keeping the ABC parts real and putting the 255 in the end will send the UDP broadcast only to those 250 something machines, and not the rest of the university?  Or did it not matter what I used in my home network setup example, and what works here wont work in the university blocks?

If not, what does the "255.255.255.255" do here?  Can I restrict the broadcast range to only the subnet of our department or will it hit every machine?  Or will "255.255.255.255" only look as far as the dhcp server for the department anyways?

I'm lacking the understanding to googlize my questions properly to get the answers I think I'm looking for...
