VB6 programming: looking for freeware code to have VB app dial out modem line and play a wave file

Asked by: mizetreestump1

Need my VB application to physically dial out my modem line and then play a message (wave file).  I know how to use modem commands to get the VB app to dial  "ATDT" etc but once the party answers I have no idea how to have the VB app play a wave file through the open modem line.   I remember the early days of modems, where every modem came with a freeware phone answering machine software, so the idea of dialing into a modem line and doing DTMF or hearing wave files (or having it dial out) I am thinking is not a new technology and is possible, just not sure how involved or if there are sample source code for VB6 our there...

how to play a wav file over a modem:

It sounds like all I have to do is find a modem with an audio  line in, dial using comm port ATDT commands which I already know how to do from VB, then just play a wave file and make sure the line out is live at the time.  This solution will work for me if it true.  I am already looking online for a cheap modem with a line in and will test this as soon as I can get one in hand.  I'll accept the solution as soon as I can test and confirm, thank you much!

I contacted Tiger Direct, after looking on their web site at about 30 different modems.  I could not see one with an audio line in jack.  I called Tiger Direct sales and tech support, who had me on hold for 20 mins, and finally said they "don't believe they have such a modem" but obviously didn't want to open or look at every box physically.  Your answer of using the sound card piped into the modem's line in makes sense to play a wave file after the modem dials out, but it looks like it might be a while to find such a modem.  I would even entertain using a 3rd party telephone answering software that comes with voice fax/modems, if I could find a way to set up a batch script to have it dial out and play a wave file called from my VB app.  If I can find such a modem with an audio line in jack and it works I'll accept your solution, but it might take me a while before I can test this.  I am hoping this question can remain long enough for you to get credit pending me finding such a modem and testing, thanks for the suggestion!
