Question

Date Picker Control Missing from Control Toolbar

Asked by: witzph1

I'm using Outlook 2003 andI am doing my first custom form.  I've created a folder to hold "Mail and Post Items," then designed a form using the Standard Forms Library "Messages" form as a starting point (IPM.Note).

The form is a Paid Time Off (PTO) request form.  It's pretty simple.  I want to include two date picker fields labeled "PTO Start Date" and "PTO End Date."  I tried from within the Field Chooser to create a new field of type "Date/Time" with the format I like, but it adds the fields as a blank field, not a picker.  So I searched on this topic, and from what I read, I should be able to pick a date picker control from the Controls Toolbox.  But the of all the buttons shown in the toolbox, none are date pickers.  (See attached screenshot.)

Why don't I see a date picker in my control toolbox?  Does it have something to do with the fact that I based my custom form on the "messages" form and not the "calendar" form?

It is never there by default
Right click there on toolbox, add additional controls, and select Microsoft Office Outlook Date Control Or Calendar Controls.

Microsoft Windows Common Controls-2 6.0 (MSCOMCT2.OCX) is no longer included with Microsoft Office XP Developer.
Microsoft Windows Common Controls-2 6.0 includes the following ActiveX controls:
Microsoft Animation Control
Microsoft UpDown Control
Microsoft MonthView Control
Microsoft Date and Time Picker Control
Microsoft Flat ScrollBar Control

Thanks, greenhacks.  I had been trying to right-click on the controls toolbox, but had not been right-clicking in the right place.  I finally figured out where to right-click to see the "Custom Control" option.  But when I scroll through the list of custom controls to add, neither of the "Microsoft Office Outlook Date Control" nor the "Microsoft Office Outlook Calendar Controls" was listed.  See screen shot.

You mentioned the MSCOMCT2.ocx file.  I had done a search and found this file in my c:\windows\system32 folder so I thought I must have what I needed.  Maybe there are different versions of this file.

I followed your link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297381/en-us to download the MSCOMCT2.ocx file.  It comes to me in a .cab format.  Not quite sure what to do with the .cab once I have it downloaded.  Sorry!  Can you help me with this?

Did you check Calendar Controls in the same list as in image?
That cab file needs to be extracted by winrar. And then in VB Editor, add a reference to it, by going to Tools/Reference/Browse/

I was looking in the list starting with "Microsoft Office..." as in the screen shot above.  Since the list was extensive, I just scrolled down to that section as you suggested.  When I scroll back up to the c's I now see both "calendar control" and "calendar control 11.0."  Any preference?

Try either if it works, but keep in mind this may not be exact date picker like we have in VB6. Possibly Microsoft did not give such control for VBA development. So alternate way is the best option.

by: witzph1Posted on 2009-09-29 at 14:07:34ID: 25453478

The "calendar control 11.0:" seemed to be best.  I was hoping for a more traditional "small footprint" date picker, where the calendar dropped down from an arrow, but this will work.

Thanks for your help.
