Question

Database Connection - MDAC - windows 2000/XP

Asked by: Marv-in

I work for a large company. I have a 2000 machine that I do my development on and our workstation people are moving to xp sp2.

I use ado 2.8 as a reference for my database connections

using the ms mdac chceker util i found:
2000 - MDAC 2.8 RTM
XP - MDAC 2.8 SP1 on XP SP2

I get a automation provider error when i compile on the 2000 and run it on the XP - most likely its because they are different mdacs - the best part is they wont let me install an older mdac version becuase they say its a security risk.

so .. here is my question - what can i do to make my db connection work acros both?

Can you install the new MDAC on your machine?  Can you debug on on of the XP machines?  If not debug, then at least setup a log file and have the errors logged to see which line genreates the problem.

Can you show it, please?

I changed my connection string from:
"DSN=mydsn;UID=xxxxxx;PWD=xxxxxx"
to:
"Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle.1;Password=xxxxxx;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=xxxxxx;Data Source=server_sid"

I am assuming that all clients have Oracle client tools setup and you checked the tsnames.ora file for server_sid.

Can you get an XP machine to run uncompiled code with?

by: Marv-inPosted on 2005-04-07 at 12:54:40ID: 13730474

yeah we had the client with the ora files setup.

I could install vb but that might compromise our test machine. What were you thinking?

by: leonstrykerPosted on 2005-04-07 at 13:09:10ID: 13730609

>What were you thinking?

I am thinking you will not be able to figure out that is wrong, unless you take a look at teh code in that enviroment.

I did place some extensive error checking and found that it errors on the execution of the .open function

by: sweatbeastPosted on 2005-04-07 at 16:11:55ID: 13732001

You may be able to deploy the pertinent controls from MDAC as a side by side assembly with your app on the XP box. Do a search for 'side by side' on Microsoft.com

In a nutshell, you reference the objects via a manifest.

no - they will not let me install mdac because they say its a security risk even tho they have a patch for it.

here is some code:
dim MyConn as ADODB.Connection
myconn.connectionstring = <place before mentioned strings here"
myconn.open <- error

I beleive the error was like - automation provider not found

i will have to check again
