Question

vb6 error cannot insert into oracle

Asked by: Maritimer

I cannot get any of my sql commands for oracle to Update or insert etc. No errors are generated, so I am unsure what is wrong. My select does return a record so I know I am connected. Below is my code. I am using VB6

Sub MesUpload()

Hi,

Perhaps the changes need to be committed to take effect.  Since a select statement doesn't change the db, there are no changes to commit.
You could try doing the following (I took one of the sql statements from your example code):

sql = " update e_cs_sequence_gen set seq_id = " & seqid & " + (select count(*) from eqp_import)"
sql = sql & " where id = 'SEQUENCE_A'; commit;"

Hope that helps.

It doesn't like the semi colon at the end. I think microsoft impicity puts one in. It complains about a bad character.

Hi,
I have doubt that you didn't set he connection string.  You have specified the connection as "pubOraCn" but you didn't assign to it the user ID and password.
I used to connect to Oracle using VB6 forms but I am using a slightly different method where I ahve to set the user ID, the password, the server and the driver in the connection string.

Can you verify this with your procedure.

Regards;;

..
are you placing the mentioned user ID, password, etc. in an ODBC string?
.. then check your ODBC drivers.

Yes I am using the connection string and my select statement returns a record, it is just the Inserts that do not seem to commit.

Oraconn = "UID=meslive;PWD=vstrain_adm;DRIVER={Microsoft ODBC for Oracle};" _
            & "SERVER=VSTRAIN;"

    Set pubOraCn = New ADODB.Connection
    pubOraCn.ConnectionTimeout = TimeOutValue
    pubOraCn.CommandTimeout = TimeOutValue

    pubOraCn.Open Oraconn

Hi,

You have probably tried this, but did you try the sql statement:

sql = " update e_cs_sequence_gen set seq_id = " & seqid & " + (select count(*) from eqp_import)"
sql = sql & " where id = 'SEQUENCE_A'; commit"

WITHOUT the semi-colon at the end?  I noticed your select statement doesn't have a semi-colon on the end.
I doubt you are having problem with the connection string because the select statement is working.

Hi all thanks for the help. I will split the points for the effort. I found the error and there was no way you could have found it. as it was not in the code. The eqp_temp table was created as a temp table so subsquent inserts since my first try would not work. I destroyed the table and created it as a regular table. (didnt want to use a temp table anyways, code was from a previous developer). Anyways since that it now runs perfect.
