Question

How to use VBscript to send email with or without SMTP service?

Asked by: richtree

Hi,
I like to send email from a host that may not have SMTP service installed. I try the following sample code from Microsoft website and it does not work. I may miss some configuration here. Please take a look and let me know how to make it work.
Here is my goal: I need to be able to send email from a workstation that has Internet connction. This action is either time-interval driven or event driven. I tried the following without success yet.

1. Send email from a script with SMTP service installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/default.mspx?mfr=true
Set objEmail = CreateObject("CDO.Message")

objEmail.From = "monitor@mycorp.com"
objEmail.To = "admin@mycorp.com"
objEmail.Subject = "Atl-dc-01 down"
objEmail.Textbody = "Atl-dc-01 is no longer accessible over the network."
objEmail.Send
I save the above code as send-mail1.vbs and run it from a XP machine with SMTP service started. It did not run into any error but I did not receive this email either.
Q#1.1 Without specifying a real SMTP server, how does the script know how to send it out?
Q#1.2 How to 'trace' the test email so I know where the problem is?
2. Send email without SMTP service installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/scripts/default.mspx?mfr=true
Set objEmail = CreateObject("CDO.Message")

objEmail.From = "monitor@mycorp.com"
objEmail.To = "admin@mycorp.com"
objEmail.Subject = "Server down"
objEmail.Textbody = "Server1 is no longer accessible over the network."
objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _
    ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusing") = 2
objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _
    ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserver") = _
        "smarthost"
objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _
    ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserverport") = 25
objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Update
objEmail.Send
I save the above code as email-no-smtp.vbs and run it from the same XP workstation. It run into error on line#15: The transport failed to connect to the server.
Q#2.2: What kind of (remote) server do I need if I do not have SMTP service installed on the local machine?
Q#2.3: Any such servers available (for free)? I guess there should be very few. Otherwise the spammers could take advantage of them.

Q#3. Do you have any other solution to achieve my goal?
Thanks a lot.

Install an smtp service on the workstation you are using to run this code..do this in add/remove programs>add remove windows components......  The code looks fine...  As long as you can resolve "smarthost",...which is the actual servername.

smtp service is already installed.
I can run the #1 code without error, but I could not receive the email.
For #2 scenario, no smtp service is required. The code return an error message (see my original post). What 'smarthost' should I use?
thanks.

As far as I know, you still need an SMTP server to be able to relay the email through.  So, if you know the host name of an SMTP server on your LAN, you can use Code 2, and change "smarthost" to that host name.

And, you may need to allow your SMTP server to accept relay mail from your LAN IP address, but maybe not....

Regards,

Rob.

First of all....that code is misleading.  It works....but you still need to specify...  Either an actual smarthost...which you don't have.... or the name of a server that has smtp service installed.

"smarthost"......  needs to be changed to match the servername that is hosting the smtp service.  If that is the local machine...  You can use "localhost" , or "127.0.0.1" if you running it locally..., or the IP address or name of your machine with smtp service if your running it against the smtp server remotely from another machine..

Hi xuserx2000,
You are right on code#2. Once I enter the smtp server name in the place of 'smarthost', the code runs successfully.
But I still have problem with code#1: it runs without any errors but I do not receive the email.
Q#4 Any idea of why?
Q#5. Though smtp is installed on my workstation. How does it know which smtp server to pick if it is not specified? Where to specify it?
Thanks.

The first code is almost identical...except...  The first code assumes the local host is a smarthost if the server object is not defined.  IF you had exchange installed  w/SP2....  and you ran the first code from the exchange server that was configured as a smarthost....it should work.
