The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

WMI/vbscript on Windows Terminal Server
Tags: vbscript/WMI
I've been developing/testing a vbscript which we intend to add as a login script that will automatically create an Outlook profile verses our Exchange server if the user does not have one on the pc they are using at the time.  I thought I had everything tested to the limit (on the desktop pc's) until I tested it out on a Windows terminal server (users have VPN access to a TS) - the script which runs perfectly on a desktop pc does absolutly nothing when run on a terminal server.

To keep things simple I've just cut things down to a simple WMI query (see below) and even this basic query refuses to echo out the user name.  Every time the script is run the below error appears in the framework.log.

Can anyone explain this behavour  (is there a difference between a "normal" session and a terminal services session when querying WMI objects)?

From framework.log:-
Shell Name Explorer.exe in Registry not found in process list.      05/05/2008 21:45:11.949      thread:4820      [d:\srvrtm\admin\wmi\wbem\providers\win32provider\common\implogonuser.cpp.163]
Unable to locate Shell Process, Impersonation failed.      05/05/2008 21:45:11.980      thread:4820      [d:\srvrtm\admin\wmi\wbem\providers\win32provider\common\implogonuser.cpp.175]

Simple WMI query:-
strComputer = "."

Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colComputer = objWMIService.ExecQuery ("Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem")
For Each objComputer in colComputer
strUserName = objComputer.UserName
Wscript.Echo strUserName

What about without the impersonation?

strComputer = "."

Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" & "\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colComputer = objWMIService.ExecQuery ("Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem")
For Each objComputer in colComputer
strUserName = objComputer.UserName
Wscript.Echo strUserName

Just tried without the impersonation and still the same I'm afraid.  I still get the famework.log error and a "type mismatch" when it attempts to echo out the user name (no doubt because it is NULL as it could not retrieve it).

On one of the problem computers (directly), try running the WMI Diagnostic tool:

I've run the WMI Diagnostic tool verses the said terminal server and a pc that I know responds OK in order I can compare results, to be honest both sets of results have numerous errors which makes them all but impossible to read.  However after some more "playing" today...

I tried the basic script noted above on three seperate terminal servers and got the same problem (i.e. the chances of all three having a corrupt or problematic WMI config would be very small).
I then decided to try verses another W2k3 server I'd recently build (and I knew was "clean") and suprisingly I got the same problem.

The only common factor was that I had "terminal serviced" to all the servers (i.e. three were in application mode and the last was in Admin mode only) so I thought what would happen if I physically walked into the server room and logged on at the server console (i.e. not via a TS session) and hey presto everything works when logged in at the console.

The problem therefore looks to be a general problem that affects WMI(DCOM?) when run within a terminal services session (rather than a problem isolated to a single server).

Hi, I think the issue you'll have is that when Terminal Services is in use, multiple people are logged in.

Grab a copy of the QUser.exe program available on a Terminal Server, put it on your machine, then at a command prompt, run:
quser /SERVER:<TSSERVERNAME>

and you'll see the session details.

If you need help "massaging" that data, or reading output via VBScript, let me know.

Regards,

Rob.

Hi.  I think you have inadvertantly solved my problem.

The example code (to echo out the username) was meant as an example of a really basic script that would not run on a terminal server (no point in posting something complicated if the simple stuff does not work).  Your post above made me realise that the fact it could not retrieve the username was causing my Outlook profile creation script to terminate early (as I was using the user name to query AD to be sure the user really had a mailbox before attempting to create a profile).

Now I realise getting the username using WMI in a TS session is at best problematic, I've changed my script to simply pass a couple of parameters into the script (using the %userdomain% and %username% dos environment variables) thus far it's working a treat.

Thanks for your help.

No problem. Thanks for letting us know.  Just to test....when a user logs in, have you tried something like this:

Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strUserName = objShell.ExpandEnvironmentString("%USERNAME%")

I haven't tested it, but at logon, perhaps that gives you the user name....

Regards,

Rob.
