The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How can I write a simple parser in VB with regular expressions?

I'm trying to write a simple parser for expressions.  All my expressions can be defined by a regular expression.

(*[^0-9A-Z][^0-9]+[0-9]+T[1-2][A-Z]+[0-9]+[^0-9A-Z]*)+

for example:
MIN(0T1U14*(1-0.0118280048023478),(0T1AA13*0T1G25+0T1AC13*0T1J25+0T1AE13*0T1M25)/60)
I want to write a macro that takes all identificators that can be described by regular expression +[0-9]+T[1-2][A-Z]+[0-9]+  and replaces it by a values retrieved from database.

above formula could be replace by MIN(100*(1-0.0118280048023478),(400*800+12000*1500+4000*6000)/60)
Then I would like to evaluate above formula -> it's guaranteed that resulting formula will be a valid formula with only constants in it.

Connecting to database and retrieving data from it has already been written. The problem is only know to divide formula into form like this:
variable text variable text variable ....

First formula should be divided into parts
MIN(    0T1U14     *(1-0.0118280048023478),(       0T1AA13   *     0T1G25     ....
Unfortunetly I have no idea how to do this in VB. This would be an easy problem in C++ :/

I know how to finish this problem once string is properly divided. Evaluating formula with only constants is easy.

Rather than use regular expressions, it will be easier to just substitute the values:

   Dim Formula As String
   Formula = "MIN(0T1U14*(1-0.0118280048023478),(0T1AA13*0T1G25+0T1AC13*0T1J25+0T1AE13*0T1M25)/60)"
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1U14", 100)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1AA13", 400)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1G25", 800)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1AC13", 12000)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1J25", 1500)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1AE13", 4000)
   Formula = Replace(Formula, "0T1M25", 6000)
   Formula = Application.Evaluate(Formula)

Well the problem is that I have to find all Variables in formula first. That's the main problem here :/

Here is a function to pull the variable names from the formula and return them as a Variant array:

Public Function GetVariables( _
      ByVal Formula As String _
   ) As Variant

   Dim RegExp As Object
   Dim Matches As Object
   Dim Result As Variant
   Dim Index As Long

   Set RegExp = CreateObject("vbscript.regexp")
   RegExp.Global = True
   RegExp.MultiLine = True
   RegExp.IgnoreCase = True

   RegExp.Pattern = "[0-9]+T[1-2][A-Z]+[0-9]+"

   On Error Resume Next
   Set Matches = RegExp.Execute(Formula)
   On Error GoTo 0
   If Matches Is Nothing Then Exit Function
   If Matches.Count = 0 Then Exit Function

   ReDim Result(1 To Matches.Count)
   For Index = 1 To Matches.Count
      Result(Index) = Matches(Index - 1).Value
   Next Index

   GetVariables = Result

End Function

A test routine:

Public Sub EvaluateFormula()

   Dim VariableNames As Variant
   Dim VariableName As Variant

   VariableNames = GetVariables("MIN(0T1U14*(1-0.0118280048023478),(0T1AA13*0T1G25+0T1AC13*0T1J25+0T1AE13*0T1M25)/60)")
   If Not IsEmpty(VariableNames) Then
      For Each VariableName In VariableNames
         MsgBox VariableName
      Next VariableName
   End If

End Sub

Once you have the variable names, use the code from my first post to replace the variables in the formula with values and evaluate the formula.

To finish my program I need to only one thing. Could you tell me how can I catch exceptions?
I want to be able to tell user that his formula is wrong?
