The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Batch file calls to vbscript displaying window, returns to batch without ending vbscript

Asked by almullaney in VB Script, Windows XP Operating System, Deployment Software for Development

We have a need to run a batch file to install MSI application followed by two command line changes after MSI is installed.  To complete the installation, the user must reboot the machine.  We don't want this to happen automatically as it will interrupt the user.  We have a vbscript that opens a window after the installation is complete instructing them to reboot.  However, the user must close the vbscript message window in order for the original batch file to end.  We need to know the original batch file has ended in order to ensure the installation was successful - pushed in LANDesk and reported complete only if batch ends.  What we can't control is the user successfully closing the message window - many will reboot without reading (go figure) and thus LANDesk will not be told the batch completed.
So we have a need to run the batch, call to the vbscript (or any other method of displaying a message to the user), and return to finish the original batch without user action.
Here's our vbscript being called by the batch file:

MSGSTR1 = "Installation is complete."
MSGSTR2 = "Changes will take effect after you restart your machine."
MSGSTR3 = "Click OK to close this message window."

Set shell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")

shell.Popup MSGSTR1 & vbcrlf & MSGSTR2 & vbcrlf& vbcrlf & MSGSTR3, 0, "Password Manager", 0
