The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Install MSI with parameters from HTA

Asked by johndeerb in VB Script, Scripting Languages, WebApplications

I am developing an HTML application to check whether a specific application is installed and if it is not, to install the application and associated patches.  I have been able to verify whether or not the application is installed, and now I need to find a way to install the application.  It installs from a MSI file and the file requires parameters to be passed in order to install silently.  We have succesfully installed it from a batch file by calling the MSI with the properties and flags.  Here's the kicker.  I need to be able to call the MSI with its flags from within the HTA, and run it with administrative privilages.  I have been able to run a vbscript to start cmd.exe with the oshell.runas method and then use oshell.sendkeys to send the password to the command window, then call out the batch file.  However, I prefer to start the MSI with the flags directly from the HTA (or a called vbscript) and NOT have the DOS window pop up, or at least call the MSI directly without going through the step to call cmd.exe and then oshell.sendkeys the MSI launch string. I haven't been able to use oshell.runas from the HTA or vbscript to directly call out the MSI with all its flags.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
