Question

How to extract part of a computer name.

Hi all,

I need a vb script that will be used at netlogon to do the following:

It must check the computername. (Usually in this format: PCxxxxxxE01, ADxxxxxxE01, TTxxxxxxE01, etc)

It needs to extract the xxxxxx part of the pc name and then connect to a server and enter the xxxxxx as the server name. (Server will always be: SRxxxxxxE01)

The reason for this is there is a batch file it needs to run on the server it connects to. something like \\SRxxxxxxE01\test\test.bat

We have a couple of thousand PC's that need to run a script like this, so doing it manually is not an option!

Which of the following should be extracted from your computer name?

1) From the 3rd character counting from the left end to the 4th character counting from the right end (i.e. will extract "ABC1234" from "PCABC1234E01")
2) From the 3rd character to the 8th character counting from the left end  (i.e. will extract "ABC123" from "PCABC1234E01")

It'll be as you said in your number 1.

1) From the 3rd character counting from the left end to the 4th character counting from the right end (i.e. will extract "ABC123" from "PCABC123E01")

It's only 6 digits that needs to be extracted.
