Question

Schema upgrade to 3.1

Asked by: mahmoud_2008

Dear All,

We have windows 2003 32bit domain which run in Native mode, this domain has a trust relationship with another windows NT 4.0 domain, I need to install additional DC's which run on OS windows 2003 64bit:
 I have the following questions:
1- If I run DCPROMO on the new server, will it require schema upgrade or not?
2- If I upgrade the schema from 3.0 to 3.1, will the trust between the windows NT and windows 2003 broken?
  regards

Are you going to 2003 x64    or 2003 R2?

Sounds like just 2003 in that case you won't need a schema update.  If you are going to R2 you would need a schema update.

If you went to R2 it won't break the trust.

Thanks

Mike

Hi mkline71,
Thanks for your quick respond.
I will install windows 2003 64bit R2, so  I will do schema upgrade and that's it, the trust will be OK and opertational, am I right?

by: bluntTonyPosted on 2009-11-02 at 06:33:06ID: 25719613

Yes, that is right - you will need to upgrade the schema to allow you to promote an R2 server but it won't break any external trust you have set up.

(don't give me any points!)

Ok remember for the R2 use adprep from disc 2

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776718(WS.10).aspx

To update the schema, on the schema master domain controller, insert Disc 2 and open the command prompt. Then, change to the Cmpnents\R2\Adprep folder of Disc 2

Splitting points is ok :)
