Question

Showing a message when a vbs file has completed/ended

Asked by: Simon336697

Hi guys, I have a file called prepare.vbs
What id like to happen is throw up a message to the user when the file has completed execution, but I dont know how to achieve this.
Id like to throw up one of 2 messages, a successfully completed, or failed message.
I have attached my code below.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Dim objFSO, mainFile, newFile, i, strMainFilePath, strNewFilePath

'************************************************************************************
'Path to the files. Change them to suit your needs:
'************************************************************************************
strMainFilePath = "source.txt"
strNewFilePath = "dest.txt"

'************************************************************************************
'Create a File System Object to manipulate files:
'************************************************************************************
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")

'************************************************************************************
'Now as objFSO is created, open the source text file:
'************************************************************************************

Set mainFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile(strMainFilePath, 1)
Set newFile = objFSO.CreateTextFile(strNewFilePath, True)

'************************************************************************************
'Error Checking:
'************************************************************************************

On Error Resume Next

'************************************************************************************
'Write the first 10 lines from source.txt to dest.txt: (dest.txt: lines 1-10)
'************************************************************************************

For i = 0 to 9
   newFile.WriteLine(mainFile.ReadLine)
Next

'************************************************************************************
'Close dest.txt:
'************************************************************************************

newFile.close

'************************************************************************************
'Create file temp.txt:
'************************************************************************************

set tmpFile = objFSO.CreateTextFile("temp.txt", True)

'************************************************************************************
'Write lines 11 onwards in file source.txt to temp.txt: (temp.txt: lines 11 onwards)
'************************************************************************************

do until mainfile.AtEndofStream
   tmpFile.WriteLine(mainFile.ReadLine)
loop

'************************************************************************************
'Close source.txt and temp.txt:
'************************************************************************************

mainFile.Close
tmpFile.Close

'************************************************************************************
'Replace current source.txt with temp.txt, which contains 10 rows less.
'************************************************************************************

objFSO.DeleteFile(strMainFilePath)
objFSO.MoveFile "temp.txt", strMainFilePath

'************************************************************************************
'Now, before using dest.txt, clean it to ensure no blank lines or blank spaces:
'************************************************************************************

Const ForReading = 1
Const ForWriting = 2

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set newfile = objFSO.OpenTextFile("dest.txt", ForReading)

Do Until newfile.AtEndOfStream
    strLine = newfile.Readline
    strLine = Trim(strLine)
    If Len(strLine) > 0 Then
        strNewContents = strNewContents & strLine & vbCrLf
    End If
Loop

newfile.Close

Set newfile = objFSO.OpenTextFile("dest.txt", ForWriting)
newfile.Write strNewContents
newfile.Close

'************************************************************************************
'If the last 2 chars of the dest.txt file is a carriage return, remove it:
'************************************************************************************

Set newFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile("dest.txt", ForReading)
strFile = newFile.ReadAll
newFile.Close
intLength = Len(strFile)
strEnd = Right(strFile, 2)

If strEnd = vbCrLf Then
    strFile = Left(strFile, intLength - 2)
    Set newFile = objFSO.OpenTextFile("dest.txt", ForWriting)
    newFile.Write strFile
    newFile.Close
End If

msgbox "text in alert"

Use an If statement to decide whether to message success or fail.

Hi 930913,

Im not sure how to use an if statement in terms of whether it was successful or failed mate.

Rather than On Error Resume Next, use

On Error GoTo Err

and append with

msgbox "Success"
End
Err:
msgbox "Fail"

I get a syntax error with this 930913

Try this:

msgbox ("Success")
Response.End
Err:
msgbox ("Fail")

Hi,
thanks for that, but when i add this to the end of the script, both msgboxes are displayed one after the other.

by: 930913Posted on 2009-11-08 at 08:19:59ID: 25770876

Try this then.

msgbox ("Success")
wscript.quit
Err:
msgbox ("Fail")

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-08 at 08:42:02ID: 25770946

It's better to check for errors:

msgbox("Success")
if Err.Number <> 0 then
 msgbox("Fail")
end if

Even better is to stay with the on error resume next, and check at each important error source with the above query whether an error has occurred. That allows for specific reaction instead of the generic "Fail" message.
