The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VB6 application "Access Violation" error on startup. Need advice on how to isolate cause.

Asked by skricho in Visual Basic v1.0.5.x, Visual Basic Programming

I am receiving a very generic windows error from one of my users. I do not expect that anyone will be able to provide a specific solution. I am requesting advice on how to proceed to try and isolate the cause of the error.

I have a VB6 application that is being used successfully on many Widnows XP machines. One user has begun receiving the following error message when attempting to launch the program:

Error: Access violation at 0x7C80A2D8 (tried to read from 0x8050254E), program terminated.

The program previously ran successfully for this user. The user can not identify any changes that were made to his machine when the error started.

I compiled a version of my software that includes detailed logging to try and identify where the code is breaking. The very first line of code attempts to create the log file.

I sent this "logging" version to the user. The user completely uninstalled and then reinstalled the software. The error still occurs but the log file is NOT created. The error is happening before any of my code executes.

I am looking for advice on additional steps I can take to try and isolate the cause of the error.

Thanks.
