Question

If then else issue

Asked by: dcncinc

I want to do the following:

If any cell in column c has anything in it, then I want the numbers in column d to be negative numbers.  They all have positive numbers now.  I have battled with this with no success.

I appreciate any help at all in creating a vba macro that does this.  The columns will never change.  I am using Excel 2007.

Thanks for any help

Leigh,

that won't chang the values in column D.  As per my orginal comment you still need to paste back over the Column D data range

Cheers

try something like the attached code snippet....

I do not have Excel 2007, but did test it in 2003.

using the ABS function will leave any negative numbers in D column negative.

If you want them flipped to positive, take out the ABS function.

Sub FlipIt()
Dim lngCounter As Long
Dim ws As Worksheet
Dim rng As Range
Set ws = ActiveSheet ' or whatever sheet you want this to work on.
Set rng = ws.Range("C1")
For lngCounter = ws.UsedRange.Row - 1 To ws.UsedRange.Rows.Count - 1
    If rng.Offset(lngCounter, 0) <> "" Then
        If IsNumeric(rng.Offset(lngCounter, 1)) Then
            rng.Offset(lngCounter, 1) = Abs(rng.Offset(lngCounter, 1)) * (-1)
        End If
    End If
Next

End Sub

brettdj,
your solution is fine for a 1 time only. If by any chance this file is active and is revolving and values in C can change in the future then best is:

In a blank column, say column F in F1 put, =IF(C1<>"",-1,1)
copy this formua down
Edit - Copy column F
select Column D
Edit- Paste Special and pick 'Formulas and number format' and 'multiply'

dcncinc, no need to struggle anymore you hv plenty of choices !!!

goflow,

You do realise when you copied my comments and changed only the last few words  that you included the typos .... and your small modification:

  1. Inserts a reference to column A rather than C.
  2. Wasn't actually requested by the Asker in the initial question
This may sound a little harsh, but your post comes across as points fishing, trying to make a small change to an earlier post.  Expert post's should offer a demonstrably better approach than earlier comments , or meet a different Asker requirement (as PatObrien's may well), be fully tested. And properly credit the use of earlier comments

Regards

Dave

berttdj,
I think you went 'a bit too far' in the bad intention ! it is not at all my style to go fishing for points as it is the least of my concerns. I was just giving additional comments (to benefit the asker) to your solution that's all.

The formula was right-on but I had to use the Paste Special of Formulas and Number format, then multiply and not just values and mulitply.  When I used the values and multiply, some of the numbers were negative when they shouldn't have been.  However, when I used Formulas and Number format, then multiply it was great.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone.  Both of you the solution finders were awesome.  You have saved my life you guys!!!
