ALSO...before doing any of the above, check to make sure that IE7 hasn't been set to go to a proxy of some sort!
And just for curiosity's sake, was Norton Utilities installed on the machine before you cleaned it?

Browse All Topics was working on a Windows XP Home pc today. The user was not able to connect to the internet. I'm able to ping the router, the modem and sites on the internet, but when I open IE7, it won't connect to the internet. I ran Winsock XP Fix and LSP Fix but that didn't fix the problem. Then, I ran netsh winsock repair catalog, but no joy. The IE7 diagnostic tool gave me the following:
Network adapter identification" status="reject"
Network connection status: Connected
Winsock Diagnostic
Error attmpting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2
Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed.
Can anyone give me suggestions on my next course of action?

Check to make sure that Norton Internet Security is actually active (as in paid and usable).
I can't tell you the number of times that users forget to update their license for a Symantec product and it literally STOPS the use of the computer/internet unless removed (though a tedious process) or paid in full.

hmmm...that is definately unusual especially if you've already run a winsock repair (unless something is screwing it up RIGHT after you fix it...which is plausable)
Try the following into a command line:
"netsh winsock reset catalog"
Test to see if this worked, if not then try:
"netsh winsock reset"
test to see if this worked, if not then do:
"netsh int ip reset"
If none of these work, then i'd be inclined to believe that some software or malware hidden somewhere is the culprit and is immediately corrupting the winsock over and over again.
If this is the case, then you're going to have to do some manual cleaning using various utilities, then try a repair using the repair console, or as a final result run a clean install.
