Question

Tightvnc connection closed trying to connect to xp home machine with.

Asked by: jdltek

I have installed Tightvnc 1.3.9 stable version on an XP Home machine which is behind a Linksys RV042 vpn router.  Here is my problem:  First I vpn into the router which works then I run a tightvnc viewer from my pc to connect to the XP Home machine.  I type in my tightvnc password and it takes me to the xp home screen.  There are two accounts I can login as, one is a guest account with no password which logs in fine.  The other one is a username which I click on and when I type in the password it says connection closed.  AM I missing something?  Please help!

Most probably the user's Desktop resolution is different from that of the log-in screen - it's a common issue with VNC software.  Try running the TightVNC immediately again after being kicked off - you should connect happily again.  Once there, to test the resolution issue, try changing the resolution - you will probably get kicked off again.

I have tried to login right after I get kicked off and the connection closes again right after I type in the xp username.  If it is a resolution issue then wouldn't I have the same problem logging into xp with the guest account?  I can login with that account fine, but not the account that has a username.

I have experienced similar circumstances before: the user that I could not log into had the VNC Server being loaded by their Startup folder on the Programs menu.  As a result the version started by the Startup folder takes over from the default system-running version and the password is different.

I installed it as a service on the computer.  Also, if the user is already logged into the xp home machine I can get in using tightvnc.  If the machine is at a login screen I can get into the guest account just fine (no password), but I can't get into the account that has a password.

Hmm... OK, so when you mention "can't get into the account"

1) does the machine get logged in & your connection gets dropped.
2) does the machine refused to log the user into the machine & the connection gets dropped.

If it is the former, then it is very likely that your connection is being dropped due to the resolution change I mentioned.  The problem with logging in afterwards is not one I can explain immediately.  As you mention, if the user logs on at the machine you can VNC to the machine - if you log on through the VNC, ask the individual to check whether there are multiple VNC processes showing in the task manager.

It is scenario 2.  The machine drops the vnc connection after I try to login and when I use vnc to get to the computer again it is still at the login screen.

How long between the two remote connections?  If it is long enough for the screen saver to have started up then it could be that the system is set to automatically dump you back at the login screen on activity.  I forget the exact check box name, but the check box for this is on the Screen Saver tab of the Display Settings dialogue.

There is no screen saver.  I found that the vnc server service somehow stopped on the users desktop.  I had them reboot the machine and I can now get in.  I logged into the account that I had the problem with and everything was fine.  I then switched to the guest account and tried to login and it disconnected me.  W

You mentioned switching accounts: are both accounts active together or are you logging off the one before logging into the other?  I'm curious whether the port (5900 typically) is still listening or even whether the service has stopped responding - try telnet to the server port configured for the first & check the event logs for the second: in particualr look for the tightvnc service having registered as failing (probably registered by the Service Control Manager source).

Sorry... when I connect agian it says logging in next to the guest account, but I can't log into it.  I can however log into the other account still.

IIRC, with TightVNC running as a system service you need to enter the passwords TWICE.

Once after installation to set up the default password (no user logged in)

Then after logging in to the target machine locally you have to enter the same passwords AGAIN. You may need to do this for each user of the target machine.

Try that and let me know how it goes...

WizardPrang's suggestion certainly tallies with the TighTVNC docs.  Check the pair of registry entries at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\WinVNC3

TightVNC docs: http://www.tightvnc.com/winst.html

> "it says logging in next to the guest account"

Do you mean this is displayed on the "select-user" come "welcome" screen of the XP Home machine?  Your account of what is occuring does suggest the following scenario:

- you connect to the machine while it is at the welcome screen & log into one of the accounts
- the account has a different resolution to the welcome screen & this difference closes the connection
- the screen saver for the account kicks in while you are not connected & the displays settings are set to put the machine back at the welcome screen (see http://support.microsoft.com/KB/810607 )

> "but I can't log into it"

At this stage, can a user physically at the machine log into the account?

by: jdltekPosted on 2007-05-18 at 04:35:43ID: 19114711

Yes, a user that is physically at the machine can log in.

by: WizardPrangPosted on 2007-05-18 at 06:14:42ID: 19115238

Just in case I wasn't clear, get that logged-in user to:

1) Start the TightVNC service (Start->Programs->TightVNC->Launch TightVNC server
2) Double-click the V icon in the system tray
3) Enter passwords and close out.

Then try remoting in...

I got rid of fast user switching and the guest account.  I then created a new account with limited access and everything works fine.  Thanks for the suggestions!

Cool - thanks for getting back with the resolution. :)
