The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

An error occured while renewing local area connection: Access is Denied.

Asked by TechAssist in WInsock, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), TCP/IP

When powering on a laptop, the netowrk connection hangs for a long time on aquiring netowork address.  This is a dell laptop running windows XP pro, that is hardwired to a jack that it has used many times before.  This laptop often leaves the office and comes back.  The laptop is not a member of the domain and the DHCP server is a sonicwall firewall.  There are no DHCPP reservations or active leases on the firewall for that mac address.  The laptop gives the error "An error occured while renewing local area connection: Access is Denied."

I have rebooted the PC, made sure that the account has local admin right, created a new local admin account and rebooted, logged in as that account and tried it, removed both Winsock and Winsock2 directories from the registry and rebooted, reinstall the TCP/IP protocol for this device, removed and reinstalled file and print sharing for MS networks, ran ipconfig /dnsflush, ipconfig /registerdns, ran nbtstat -R, and ran the winsock fix utility and rebooted.  I still have the same problem.

The user took the laptop home last night and was able to work from home just fine.  I am asuming it got a DHCP address from the ISP or router in use at home.  I have heard of problems involving the Broadcast of DHCP packets, but im not sure the detail, and nothing on the router (also DHCP server) has changed.  I do not have physical access to the PC, so i cant wireshark it and see if i get a DHCPNACK packet back, but my next step is to go there and try that.  Any other Ideas?
