Question

Windows XP Dns trouble : Internet ok with IP...

Asked by: m-malo

Hello,

I have a very strange and yet unsolvable trouble with a Dell WindowsXP computer.

I had big trouble with the NIC, that i finally managed to solve. Now, the computer is ok, all services up & running, including DNS client.... but when i try to reach a website, i got an error, cannot connect. When i try to ping, google for instance, no answer. But when i ping one the the ips of google, it works! Also when i type that IP in browser, it works well. Even windows update works well!

i tried :

-Winsockfix / Winlsp
-Netsh commands
-upgrading/removing/changing the NIC
-Host is clean
-No malware/virus found
-SFC /Scannow
-Dns client is up

When i do a tracert or a ping -a, it does not show any name resolution

In IE8, when running the connexion diag, it says there is an error with winsock, but when i try to reset the interface or catalog, it does'nt change a thing...

It is opvious you have a Name resolution problem. Check you IP configuration (if it is manual) or check that it is taking the correct DNS server configuration through DHCP.
please post the output of the command :
"IPConfig /all"

If the DNS defined is an interneal server, it should be able to resolve Internet names, i.e. it should have internet connectivity and it is configured to do so .
If you are configured to use an ISP's DNS, make sure you can reach it for name resolution.

I know you said you tried winsockfix but its still my best guess. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Perhaps, could you try with mozilla or downgrade to IE version 7 to see if it works?
We have experienced alot of problems (mostly security issues) with IE8 at work.

i tried to put the ISP's DNS -> same thing
when  i do a Nslookup, then type google.com for instance, it works. I can ping gateway/dns server... which answer to the IE problem : it is the same thing with all programs that uses DNS, including all browsers... even "ping" doesn't resolve the names.

I already tried to uninstall IE8... :(
Winsockfix done 10+ times ...

OMG!

The problem seems to be gone : i uninstalled all the MS updates (more than 50), rebooted, and it works flawlessly!! Last attempt : i try to reinstall all the updates to see if it works, if not i re-uninstall all then blocks the updates!

Thanks... to me :D just kidding, thanks to all for the effort!

confirmed, there is an update causing trouble : as soon as i reinstalled all the updates, it starts not working again... i'll uninstall all the updates, then block the windows updates... and thats all!!

Thanks to u all

It would be nice to know which update caused it :)

by: m-maloPosted on 2009-10-23 at 02:40:26ID: 25642685

For sure, but i have to say i do not have time & patience to uninstall an update, reboot, test, uninstall an update, reboot, test, etc....

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-23 at 02:42:28ID: 25642701

Thats true, especially for 50+ updates.....!

by: igor-1965Posted on 2009-10-23 at 05:28:35ID: 25643682

Well, without antivirus and security patches you are going to spend more time reinstalling your system once (rather sooner than later) it got screwed.
