Confirm message in HTML

Hi Experts,

    I am using the following code to delete the record from the database.

    The code is as follows:

<script language = "javascript">
function conf()
{
      var an = confirm("Do you want to Delete");
}
</script>
<body>
<a href = "delete.jsp" onclick="conf()"> Delete</a>
</body>
</html>


   When i click on the Delete Link i get an confirm message. but if i cancel the operation by clicking the cancel button in the confirm message even then it is going to the delete.jsp page to delete the record.

   suggest me how to solve this problem

i want to delete the record only when i click on the ok button on the confirm box. if not to remain in the same page
