The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VB 6 program launching Office Installer

Asked by bluedragon99 in Miscellaneous Programming, Signal Processing, Installation

I've written a VB program that installs all the latest Micrsoft patches. It uses a function called ShellandWait which requires the following two API calls:

Private Declare Function OpenProcess Lib "kernel32" _
(ByVal dwDesiredAccess As Long, ByVal bInheritHandle As Long, ByVal dwProcessId As Long) As Long

Private Declare Function GetExitCodeProcess Lib "kernel32" _
(ByVal hProcess As Long, lpExitCode As Long) As Long

I'm running this on Windows 2000. I do a runas command to kick off the .exe so that all the Shell commands inside the program run as local admin. The problem is that when I do this, Office Installer pops up and starts looking for the Office 2000 install CD. If I point it to the network share where the data1.msi file is located, it does what it needs to do and my program runs without a hitch. The problem is that I'm distrubiting this to remote sites that won't have access to the network share nor do I want them to even see that Installer box pop up. I've put msgbox's in my code and determined the Installer is popping up even before the Form_Load function runs so it has to be one of the API calls that is causing the problem.

Does anyone know of a way around this issue?
