Question

Unable to start debugging on the web server: Access is denied. in ASP.NET

Asked by: Wierdy1024

I am using Visual studio .NET on computer A which is a windows XP SP2 machine.

I am trying to create an ASP.net program on computer B which has Windows XP SP2 IIS 6.0 web services and the full remote debugging tools from the visual studio CD.

The problem is that I can build the application and save it but when I try to debug it I get the following error: "Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Access is denied. Click help for more information"

To try to solve this problem i did the following:

I added everyone to the Debugging users group
I added everyone to the administrators group
I added everyone to the VS developers group

Has anyone any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

This seems to be about remote debugging ... a useful article can be found at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/vsdebug/html/vctskinstallingremotedebugmonitor.asp

Since you've granted acces to the important groups there might be a lack of priviledges for the current process ... cause if you (or any of the groups you've mentioned) owns a process, you can debug it without further permissions.

Best regards,
Raisor

I looked at the link you gave and it seemed to refer to C and C++ only with native debuging.  I am using the Visual Basic language.  I did however find this page from your link nd I thought i'd give it a go:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/vsdebug/html/vxerrerrorattachingtoprocessindifferentterminalserversessionisnotsupportedonthissystem.asp

by: Wierdy1024Posted on 2004-12-19 at 13:49:29ID: 12863060

I quoted the link wrong:  here is the correct one:  http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/vsdebug/html/vxtskASPRemoteDebuggingSetup.asp

the above didn't help.  The instructions also seemed not absolutely what there really was!  I couldn't locate step 3 at all!.  I did manage to get back on course for step 4.

I've also added ASPNET to the debug users and administrator group

Hi,

I guess it won't be ... but maybe it's as simple as these guys describe: http://weblogs.asp.net/ngur/archive/2004/05/26/142414.aspx

... what one of them exeperienced is, that if IE security (Tools-> Internet options-> Security -> Internet or Intranet -> Custom level -> User authentication) is set to anonymous logon, you will get the above error ...

... another guy stated that he had the same problem and after changing to automatic in Intranet it worked. he thinks that it doesn't make sense that a manual prompt would fail even though the proper credentials are entered, but that it, either way, worked.

A third guy added that on windows 2003, you must put your URL in the intranet zone site listing ...

well, however, I hope this puts you on the right track!
Best regards,
Raisor

nope - I tried all four options for internet and intranet

Hi,

I'm really sorry that my link didn't help!

My impression is, that you probably are in special environment or that your version of Visual Studio runs under very special and unique conditions ... have you yet tried what you're trying on a less "complex" system ... in a "normal" development environment ...

... what I mean is, if your problem would seem to be an every day problem ... we'd already had found the solution you're looking for ... please don't understand this as an offend ... I'm just trying to figure out what could be different from your environment to hundred thousands of others that are not performing like yours does!

Best regards,
Raisor

by: Wierdy1024Posted on 2004-12-19 at 14:51:16ID: 12863275

yep - I understand.

well - i've had enough of fiddling with this  (its taken me almost a days work),  Which should I reformat first?

PS - could it be to do with the fact there is no domain here - just a 2 computer LAN (I'm at home).  Most of the websites seem to refer to setting up the domains etc.

Also when opening the project I am never asked for any credentials at all.  The project opens successfully so my credentials must be cached somewhere.  Is there any place i can clear these stored passwords?

Hi,

I'm not a supporter (a respective ... job after all! ... that I'm not doing in first nor in second level!) accusing a user! ...

... I'm sorry if I've given you the impression that your system is too unique for beeing in a row with hundreds of thounds systems that do an every day job without showing any errors ... maybe because of non usage ;-)) ...

... let's find out what could be the cause of the problems you're having ... I'm not in your system -> you're (probably and hopefuly) the only one in there ...

... when, do you think, did it start and what do you really think could be the reason?

... please let's start to solving your problem!

Best regards,
Raisor

OK - it never started - I never had it working - ever!

I've decided to format computer B and reinstall XP SP2.

I'll report back when I've done that

Its just a few settings in Your IIS.

When You get the messagebox which tells you that
"Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Access is denied. Click help for more information"

Do exactly that, I mean "Click help"

When you click on the help it gives you specific steps how to enable Debugging on your machine
its just a few check boxes in the IIS.

Try that....

Thanks in advance

Well the problem is I don't get that error here so I can't see the help myself.

I got this error long back on one machine and I remember we solved it just by following the Instructions in Help.

Anyway I'll try to replicate it here,
its go to do something with the properties of the site in IIS, there's some check box related to debugging I'll try and be back...

Hi,

I've found an article that seems to be a working QuickFix!

QUICK FIX: Error while trying to run ASP.NET project

Problem:
Installing Visual Studio .NET and running ASP.NET for the first time generate error as shown below.

Error message:
Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. The server does not support debugging of the ASP.NET or ATL Server applications. Run setup to install Visual studio .NET server components. If setup has been run verify that a valid URL has been specified.

Cause:
This is a problem with IIS Lockdown

Resource identified on the internet.

The following solution were found in newsgroups:
1. Register "aspnet_isapi.dll" manually.
2. Run c:\winnt\system32\iisreset.exe
3. check whether you have "urlscan.ini" on your machine. If so:
a). Make sure that you are admin on the machine
b). You need to edit "urlscan.ini" like
.. Add "DEBUG" under "[AllowVerbs]" section
.. Add ".aspx" and ".asmx" under "[AllowExtensions]" section.
c). After edit the file, you need to restart IIS.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I've reformatted and reinstalled both pc's and the problem stil happens.  I suspect some incompatibility with one of the other pieces of software on one of the systems.

So I gave up and did local debugging instead (which is a pain because the web server only has 96MB of memory (its only a test server) and it is VERY VERY slow when running VS .net and all the web services).

I've got my program working now anyway.
