The company I work for is considering purchasing new installer software to replace the limited windows installer features of the Visual Studio.NET product. We are looking for a scalable solution that will in the future give
us the opportunity to offer trial-based products. Based on our research, InstallShield 10.5 Premier offers Trialware capability, but NOT for .NET and Java applications. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas, or
know if InstallShield has advanced programming scalabilty to have custom programming for trial-based tasks in .NET?

Handling application trials is not really a job for an installer, which ideally has little control over a program other than to add or remove it. What you are looking for is some sort of executable wrapper. A system like eLicense might benefit you more and save your company an investment in installshield (Especially when something like NSIS (nullsoft.com) is available, GPL'd, and as powerful as most software suites could ask for).
Short answer: www.elicense.com
