Question

Adjusting security rights on folders

Asked by: silchester

Our quality system dictates that in each indiviudal project directory we have to create a folder with Add&Read Rights only.
This is very time consuming.

I want to right a VB program that can

search the projects directory for any folders named SAFEDOCxxx where xxx is a numeric number.
Then I want to re-assign is rights to say Domain Users - Add & Read instead of Full rights.

How would I approach this in VB. Is it possible?

I suggest you to have a look to this:

SetACL
http://setacl.sourceforge.net/

that is also available as an ActiveX control.

From the site:

"[...] SetACL is a set of routines for managing Windows permissions (ACLs) from the command line, from scripts and from programs. These routines can be used from various container or interface programs. Currently there exist a command line version to be used in batch files or scripts and an ActiveX control (SetACL.ocx) which can be used from any COM-enabled language (VB, WSH scripts, ...). "

    Dim myDir As String

    myDir = Dir$("C:\SAFEDOC*", vbDirectory)
    Do While myDir <> vbNullString

        Debug.Print myDir

        myDir = Dir$
    Loop

XCACLS.vbs (the Extended Change Access Control List tool) is a Visual Basic Script that performs the duties you wish to do as-is.  If you wanted to, you could easily modify it for additional/different functionality.

See the description and download it here:

if you don't want to register any new components, wmi provides a security interface without having to modify the client machine, additionally it works remotely, if you would like I will post a sample script that does what you are looking for

hi ,

refer to this http://www.sysinternals.com/information/acleditors.html
and for remote machine i think logging is the problem ,to solve this  map other machine drive on your machine by using proper rights.

and as mention above you can also use WMI for this.

Thanks for the advice, after going through the options, I feel it is better to expand on the issues.

The folder & file permissions will have already been created, with its security inherited.

Domain Users            Full Access                                    This Folder, Filese & Subfolders.

I then need to allow a group of users (e.g domain users) the following permissions.

Domain Users             Read, Write & Execute                    This Folder Only
Domain Users            Read & Execute                                Files & subfolders only

I am having problems trying to understand how I can set permissions on "This folder only" and also the "Files only" i.e the ones contained within the folder.

I have tried SetACL but with not much success as there seems a limited amount of documentation.

I have had the most success with XCACLS as an exe. I have not tried using the VBS form. However I cannot replicate the exact file/folder permissions.

Also there are numerous SAFEDOC directories, some  as sub directories rather than in the root.

Many thanks in advance

well the first thing you need to do is clear inheritance...

if folder a has security a, then subfolder b inherits that security, when a changes, be "changes" (no actual change occurs but the behavior is as if changes where made)  Every subfolder would need a copy of the permissions as you want them prior to modifying the parent directories ACL

Thanks for the advice. I have been using Xcacls so far. Not fussed what approach I take. Could you please post some sample script to assist.
wrt to clearing inheritance / etc

Kind Regards

David

I object. I feel the original question has been addressed by several suggestions, including a VB script.

"I want to right a VB program that can

[...]

How would I approach this in VB. Is it possible?"

The question grew to encompass the detail of inheritence, which the "experts" were either at a loss to explain or felt it went beyond the scope of the original question.

Perhaps a distribution of points, with 1/2 refunded or similar?

And after this ALL experts abandoned the Asker.
Sorry - EE is not hit and run. You either work with the Asker or do not get points

by: silchesterPosted on 2006-04-03 at 07:38:37ID: 16361410

I have given some points for the assistance but Venabili comments are very true. The original question
did not include inheritances but I am sure that experts in this area would have probably realised that this would have come into play.

I posted comments which were not answered.

I am still struggling along, but have decided to try on my own!
