The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

.NET fixed length String output to file

Asked by Thrasymachus in Miscellaneous Programming

I am upgrading an application from vb6 to .NET and I am having problems with at Structure that contains (among other things) fixed length strings. The type and it's assigned values look good in the code when I am debugging, but when I try to write it to a file in .NET it seems to be adding a bunch of extra charecters to it. (although I cannot see the pattern) here is part of the code:

Public Structure KIPrecord
        <VBFixedString(8), System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalAs(System.Runtime.InteropServices.UnmanagedType.ByValArray, SizeConst:=9)> Public Kipname() As Char
        <VBFixedString(12), System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalAs(System.Runtime.InteropServices.UnmanagedType.ByValArray, SizeConst:=13)> Public FileName() As Char

..... Several more things here

End Structure

Private Sub KIPJob

     Dim krRecord As New KIPrecord
     Dim iKipFile As Integer = FreeFile()

            FileOpen(iKipFile, sDropDir & "\" & sJobName & "\" & sJobName & ".JOB", OpenMode.Binary)
     With krRecord
                    .Kipname = sJobName '8 char
                    .FileName = Right(sFileName, 12) '12 char
...And the rest of KrRecord here

     End With
      FilePut(iKipFile, krRecord)
End Sub
--------------------------------------

The File I get starts like this
"              HE105-211       ER SHEET.PLT"...
when I want
"HE105-21ER SHEET.PLT"...

Any Idea Why .NET is putting the extra characters in the file? it worked great in vb6
I can post the vb6 code if you think it would help
Thanks for your help
