XML schema is kind of like a template, but not completely. It's closer to the table definition in a database. You don't have to have a schema for your XML docs, but it's considered good practice.

If you have an xml file where you have 7 child elements, then your schema would list the tags in your xml file, with the right hierarchy, and say what type of data the elements will hold and whether an element is required or not.
