There should be programs out there that records the audio as it goes out to your speakers. Most of the programs cost money. Here's a free one that i was able to find.

For just audio you can use Audacity, but the trick is to set up your soundcard in the record section to "stereo mix".
For video + audio try Replay Video Capture:

Hi da emerson,

take a look at CamStudio:
http://camstudio.org/

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files. Plus, it's completely free!

Hope this helps!

Hey Shuborarder,  try Replay Video Capture and let me know what you think.

I use Adobe Audition 3 (formely CoolEdit) for ripping streaming audio or video sound. But this is more advanced commercial tool. If you want something lighter and free go for Audacity.

At work i use Camtasia studio for creating video tutorials or you can try Adobe Captivate (expensive :S).

Using the aforementioned "Stereo Mix" recording source in your soundcard recording settings, the best free audio solution by far is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

There are only really two "formats" to choose from to store the audio:

Lossy:
either
MP3 using free Lame codec (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php)
or
OGG totally open source but less supported equivalent (http://www.rarewares.org/ogg.php)

Lossless:
         FLAC : http://flac.sourceforge.net/

For recommended settings for the lossy codecs, I would recommend www.hydrogenaudio.org.
If in doubt, 192kbits is a pretty safe bet.
