Question

How to Extract Movie Clips information from Window Media File (.wmv)

Asked by: aosexpert

I am working with Window Media Audio/Video (.wmv) files. Each .wmv file contains 2 or 3 movie clips that is if you play the DVD of any movie it shows different tracks exist within that Movie file like 1) Chapter 1,
2)Chapter2, and 3)Chapter3 so on and when you select or press 1 or 2  the second movie clips starts.
Just like that i want to extract those movie clips information from .wmv file's Metadata (that contains the information of those clips).
So far I have extracted the .wmv file information from Metadata by using [MetadataEditor class of .NET] but fail to get the movie clips information.
Any sort of help will be appreciated.

hi aosexpert
can this assist you
also as you know MS moves it sites I have included the new site
Extracting Metadata from Windows Media files
In this article, I'll describe how to use the Windows Media Format SDK to access the metadata embedded in Windows Media files for cataloguing purposes. Also included is two managed classes written in C# that vastly simplify the usage of this SDK.

Thanks for the reply Merete, actually i have implemented that example mentioned at http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/articles/100730.aspx.But  It only provides me the Metadata of  the .wmv file but i need the movies clips information that has been encapsulated in that .wmv (Window Media Video) file. Just like Window's Movie Maker software
("Windows Drive\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe").
When you import any .wmv file to Movie Maker it displays the Movie Clips catalog that has been encapsulated in that .wmv file with there own Metadata i-e Duration, Title or Publisher etc. and you can play any movie clip by clicking on it. My requirement is that same.
I hope this will give you clear idea & hope to listen from you.
Thanks again

Morning aosexpert: this is out of my depth sorry, unless it the way you have worded your question, within these movie clips you noted in your first comment >>play the DVD of any movie it shows different tracks exist within that Movie file like 1) Chapter 1,
2)Chapter2, and 3)Chapter3 so on and when you select or press 1 or 2  the second movie clips starts.
there is an shell run  attached to this function see if this helps explain it.

Hi Merete:
Thanks again for the reply. Sorry if it’s difficult to understand for you please let me explain it again with a real-time example. If you ever used Window Movie Maker software that can be found at the following path (Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe").
In Window Movie Maker when you import any video (.WMV) file through "Import Video" option it shows a catalog of all the Movie Clips that has been encapsulated in that particular video (.WMV) file. Window Movie Maker also allows you to play those Movie Clips one by one or you can also play the whole video as well. Actually i want the same functionality of Window Movie Maker through any API or Any application.
I hope you have got my point. I am really looking forward to your reply

Thank you aosexpert:
yes its fasinating how it does this, even a very small WMV grabbed off the net when importing it finds anywhere up to 15 clips.
How it does this is a wonderful question, I will have to do some research.

This is known as a filmstrip
Movie Maker imports all audio, video, as still image contents or snaps into a filmstrip.
video you are making appears as a film strip showing each scene in clips
Clips are created through a process called "clip detection."

So that was fun researching that but how to make an API  is way out of my range, but armoured with this new knowledge  you might find some experts that can assist you with that part.

this is what I have come up with so far:
How? to make a film strip. best viewed in firefox.

Thank you Merete:
I really appreciate it. Yes now you have got my point. Well i am working on this but haven't find anything that can give me any break through :( However, it is very initial for me to finger it out. So I will really appreciate if you keep in touch regarding this issue as you have already seen that its really tricky and interesting thing.
Thanks Again

I really have no experience in writing code, if i understand you to apply this feature through any API or Any application, is that posible WMM is a big secret  what code was used to write this program feature in WMM?
if i knew what the language was i could probably find something.
As I said i really have no idea on that area but this is what i came up
